Planning a cruise? Our comprehensive Cruise FAQ has answers to your top questions about packing, dining, excursions, and more. Set sail with confidence! Cruise FAQs: Everything First-Time and Repeat Cruisers Ask Got a question about cruising? You're in the right place. We've pulled together honest, straight-to-the-point answers to the questions cruisers actually ask most — from packing and passports to what each cruise line is really like onboard. Browse by category below. Cruise FAQs — Answered by Someone Who's Actually Been On Board Frequently asked questions Onboard Life Packing Booking & Planning Celebrity Cruises Disney Cruise Line Norwegian Cruise Line Carnival Royal Caribbean MSC Cruises First-Time Cruisers What is a typical day like on a cruise ship? Sea days run on a printed daily program: breakfast from around 7am, pool deck fills up by 9, activities all day (trivia, dance classes, cooking demos), then dinner at your set time or whenever you walk into the main dining room if you're on flexible dining. Port days are looser, most people are off the ship by 8am and back by 5. Do cruise ships have wifi and how much does it cost? Yes, but it's slow compared to home and it's not free on most mainstream lines. Expect to pay somewhere between $15 and $25 a day depending on the package, streaming-speed plans cost more. Book it before you sail, it's always cheaper than buying it once you're onboard. Will I get seasick on a cruise? Most people don't, modern ships have stabilizers that cut a lot of the motion. If you're prone to it, sail on a bigger ship, book a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck, and pack Dramamine or Sea-Bands just in case. What is the dress code on a cruise ship at dinner? Most nights it's smart casual, collared shirts for men, no swimwear or tank tops in the main dining room. There's usually one or two "formal" or "elegant" nights per week if that's your line's style, and specialty restaurants tend to expect a step up from the buffet. Do you need cash on a cruise ship? Not onboard, everything runs on your cabin key card which is linked to a credit card. You'll want small bills for tipping in port and for staff who go above and beyond, but the ship itself is basically cashless. What happens if you run out of money on a cruise? Your onboard account gets declined and you can't charge anything new until you add funds or a valid card at guest services. It won't stop you from being on the ship, you just can't buy drinks, spa treatments, or extras until it's sorted. Can you smoke on a cruise ship? Only in designated outdoor areas, usually a specific section of one open deck, and never in cabins or on balconies on most lines. Get caught smoking in your cabin and you're looking at a cleaning fee that can run into the hundreds. Is there a curfew or quiet time on a cruise ship? No official curfew for adults, but noise policies usually kick in late (around 11pm to midnight) for common areas near cabins. Kids clubs and teen areas do have set closing times, usually around midnight. What do you do on sea days on a cruise? The daily program is packed, pool time, trivia, live music, workshops, the spa, and usually a big production show at night. If you like doing nothing, a lounger with a book is just as valid an answer. How loud is it in the cabin at night? Depends entirely on location. Cabins under the pool deck, near the theater, or near the elevator lobby are the noisiest, an inside or mid-ship cabin a few decks down is your quietest bet. Do cruise ships have laundry facilities? Most ships have self-serve laundromats, usually a few dollars per wash and dry cycle, plus a paid laundry service if you'd rather hand it to your cabin steward. Not every ship has self-serve, worth checking before you pack light expecting to wash mid-cruise. What is included for free on a cruise? What is included for free on a cruise? How does room service work on a cruise ship? You call or order through the app, and on most lines standard room service (continental breakfast, sandwiches, snacks) is free, with a small charge for late-night or specialty items. Delivery usually takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on how busy the ship is. Can kids do everything adults can do on a cruise? No, kids clubs are usually age-banded (3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14) and some venues like the casino, adults-only pool deck, and certain bars are 18 or 21 and up. Most of the ship (pools, sports courts, shows, arcade) is open to everyone though. What happens if you get sick or injured on a cruise? Every ship has a medical center staffed by a doctor and nurses, open set hours with 24-hour emergency coverage. It's not free, you're billed like a private clinic visit, so travel insurance that covers cruise medical is worth having. Celebrity Ascent ship guide by The Walking Cruiser: key facts, cabins, restaurants, standout features and deck plans to help you plan your cruise. Celebrity Ascent Celebrity Ascent: The Ultimate Guide to Celebrity Cruises' Premium Edge-Class Ship Making its grand debut in late 2023, the Celebrity Ascent is the fourth and most innovative ship in Celebrity Cruises' highly acclaimed Edge Series. Designed to blur the line between indoor luxury and the open ocean, this premium vessel offers an unparalleled resort-at-sea experience. Whether you are seeking a sun-drenched Caribbean getaway or a culturally rich Mediterranean voyage, the Celebrity Ascent delivers world-class dining, cutting-edge entertainment, and breathtaking architectural design. Technical Specifications Understanding the scale of the Celebrity Ascent highlights just how much space and variety guests have on board. With a high passenger-to-crew ratio, the service is exceptionally attentive. 141,420 GT Gross Tonnage 3,260 maximum Passenger Capacity 1400 Crew Size 2023 Year Built Celebrity Cruises Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Home Port Signature Features & Innovative Design The Celebrity Ascent carries forward the revolutionary outward-facing design of the Edge class, meaning the ship is built to connect you with the sea rather than close you off from it. The Magic Carpet Perhaps the most striking feature on the exterior of the ship is the Magic Carpet. This cantilevered, floating platform reaches up to 13 stories above sea level. Depending on the time of day and its position on the ship, it transforms from an open-air lounge and dining venue to a seamless extension of the pool deck or an embarkation station. Eden Spanning three decks at the aft of the ship, Eden is a multi-sensory, glass-enclosed venue. By day, it serves as a tranquil, plant-filled lounge perfect for reading or enjoying a coffee. By night, it transforms into a vibrant entertainment hub featuring performance art, immersive shows, and a plant-based tasting menu at the Eden Restaurant. The Rooftop Garden Designed by renowned architect Tom Wright, the Rooftop Garden is a lush, living outdoor space. It features two cantilevered floating pools that extend six feet over the ship's edge, offering thrilling, unobstructed views of the water below. Luxurious Accommodations & Cabin Types With 36 distinct cabin categories, the Celebrity Ascent caters to every travel style and budget. Edge Infinite Verandas: Instead of a traditional step-out balcony, these revolutionary staterooms feature bi-fold doors that open the entire room to the water's edge at the touch of a button, increasing your living space by 23%. AquaClass Staterooms: Perfect for wellness enthusiasts, these spa-inspired rooms include complimentary access to the SEA Thermal Suite, exclusive dining at the Blu restaurant, and upgraded shower amenities. The Retreat: Celebrity's ultimate "ship-within-a-ship" luxury experience. Guests staying in The Retreat suites (such as the massive 1,892 sq. ft. Iconic Suites or the two-story Edge Villas) gain access to a private sundeck, a dedicated lounge, personal concierge service, and exclusive dining at Luminae. World-Class Dining Options Culinary enthusiasts will find themselves in heaven with 32 distinct food and beverage venues onboard, including 14 cafes and bars, four main dining rooms, and eight specialty restaurants. Four Main Dining Rooms: Instead of one massive banquet hall, Ascent features four complimentary dining rooms—Cosmopolitan (American), Cyprus (Mediterranean), Normandie (French), and Tuscan (Italian)—each offering exclusive dishes alongside a rotating signature menu. Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud: The newly redesigned signature restaurant by the world-renowned Michelin-starred chef offers globally inspired flavors in an intimate, upscale setting. The Grand Plaza: The pulsing heart of the ship, this three-story venue features the iconic Martini Bar, where expert flair bartenders put on spectacular shows beneath a massive, dynamic LED chandelier. Ultimate Relaxation: Wellness & Spa Facilities Celebrity Cruises is known for offering some of the best wellness programs at sea, and the Ascent takes this to the next level. If you are looking to unwind, the ship offers multiple tranquil spaces designed for total rejuvenation. The Solarium: A massive hit among guests, this adults-only glass-enclosed oasis sits on the Resort Deck. It features a stunning pool, hot tubs, and plush loungers, providing a quiet, climate-controlled escape from the busier outdoor decks. You can even grab a healthy bite or smoothie at the adjacent Spa Café. The Spa & SEA Thermal Suite: The onboard spa features over 120 treatments, many of which utilize destination-inspired ingredients. Guests can also purchase passes to the SEA Thermal Suite, a playground of relaxation featuring heated tile loungers, a crystalarium, a hammam, an infrared sauna, and a salt room. The Fitness Center: Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure you never miss an ocean view while working out. The facility includes top-tier Technogym equipment and offers specialized classes like F45 Training, cycling, and guided meditation. The Grand Plaza & Martini Bar Designed to feel like a bustling European piazza, the three-story Grand Plaza is the beating heart of the ship. Above the iconic Martini Bar hangs a massive, dynamic LED chandelier. Every evening, the talented bartenders put on a high-energy "Flash Flair Fusion" show, juggling bottles and pouring a dozen martinis at once while the chandelier pulses to the music. The Theatre Breaking away from traditional cruise ship stages, The Theatre on the Ascent features a 20-foot-tall, state-of-the-art 4K LED screen curving around a circular stage. This allows for immersive, tech-forward production shows featuring acrobats, vocalists, and dancers that blur the line between digital animation and live performance. Things to know before sailing Celebrity Ascent 🤫 Dining & Beverage Secrets 1. The "Hidden" Free Lunch at the Eden Café Most passengers flock straight to the crowded Oceanview Café buffet on Deck 14 for breakfast and lunch. The Insider Tip: Head down to Eden Café on Deck 5 aft. It offers a completely complimentary breakfast every morning and a fantastic complimentary lunch on sea days (think gourmet carvery sandwiches, pork belly sliders, and warm, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies). It is beautifully quiet, and many cruisers never even realize it exists because the app lists it under "snacks" rather than "restaurants." 2. The Free Pastry Hack at Café al Bacio Café al Bacio is famous for its premium specialty coffees, which require a premium drink package or an extra fee. The Insider Tip: All the food in the pastry case is 100% free for every guest. You do not need to buy a coffee to get the artisanal cakes, croissants, tarts, and afternoon finger sandwiches. You can even walk up to the counter, ask for a box to-go, and take them back to your cabin. 3. How to Avoid the Main Dining Room Hallway Traffic Because the Ascent split its main dining experience into four distinct, smaller themed restaurants, the entry corridors can get incredibly congested right around peak dining times (6:00 PM – 7:30 PM). The Insider Tip: Don’t stand around waiting in a cramped hallway. Send one person from your party to the host stand of your preferred restaurant to grab a pager. Then, head over to the nearby Grand Plaza or World Class Bar to enjoy a cocktail in comfort until your table is ready. For the quietest dining experience, ask to be seated by the windows away from the center of the ship to avoid the noise filtering up from the atrium DJs. 4. The Exclusive "White Cosmo" at Le Voyage If your readers plan to splurge on the Michelin-starred dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, there is a secret menu item they need to know about. The Insider Tip: Order the White Cosmo cocktail. It is a signature drink mixed with fresh white cranberry juice and a flower-infused ice sphere. It is entirely exclusive to this restaurant and cannot be ordered at the Martini Bar or any other lounge onboard. 🛏️ Cabin & Layout Hacks 5. The "Invisible" Bathroom Storage Drawers Storage space is always at a premium in cruise cabins, and Celebrity's sleek, minimalist design can sometimes hide functionality. The Insider Tip: In almost all standard, Concierge, and AquaClass staterooms, there are three large storage drawers hidden directly underneath the bathroom sink vanity. Because they lack traditional handles to maintain a flush look, thousands of cruisers complete their entire vacation without ever opening them! 6. Skip the Pricey Poolside Cabanas On the main resort deck, Celebrity rents out private, stylized cabanas for a steep daily fee. The Insider Tip: Save your money. Because of the asymmetrical design of the deck and the track of the sun, these cabanas offer almost zero actual shade during peak hours. If you want a shaded, quiet sanctuary without paying a dime, head up to the terraced decks surrounding the Rooftop Garden or grab a lounger on the lower level of the adults-only Solarium. 🌅 Entertainment & Nightlife Secrets 7. The Best Uncrowded Sailaway Spot The Sunset Bar (designed by Nate Berkus) on the top aft deck is the most popular spot for sailaway drinks, meaning it gets absolutely packed as the ship pulls out of port. The Insider Tip: For an uncrowded, panoramic view of the wake, grab a drink from the bar on Deck 5 and walk up the suspended interior ramps at the back of Eden. There is a row of plush, white lounge chairs facing the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. It is air-conditioned, rarely crowded, and you can still hear the acoustic music drifting up from the lounge below. 8. Free Drinks in the Smoke-Free Casino Unlike most major cruise lines where the casino is a cloud of cigarette smoke, the Celebrity Ascent features a 100% smoke-free casino. The Insider Tip: If you enjoy slots or table games, your drinks are completely complimentary while you are actively playing even if you don't have a beverage package. Just make sure the dealer or slot host logs your SeaPass card. Brilliance of the Seas Ocean View Did You Know? 1. The High-Tech Gyroscopic Pool Tables One of the ultimate cool factors on this ship is found tucked away on Deck 6 in the Bombay Billiard Club (part of the Colony Club lounge area). Playing pool on an ocean liner sounds impossible, but Royal Caribbean solved this by installing ultra-high-tech, self-leveling billiard tables. The tables use active gyroscopic sensors—similar to the technology used in stabilization systems and aviation—to continuously shift and counteract the pitch and roll of the sea. Even if the ship encounters rough waves, the table base moves while the playing surface stays completely level, ensuring the billiard balls do not roll an inch on their own. 2. The Nine-Story "Glass Elevator" Views There is a reason this vessel earned the nickname the "Ship of Glass." It was built with over three acres of exterior glass paneling, giving it an airy, open feel that modern mega-ships often lack. The architectural crown jewel is the Centrum, a spectacular nine-story central atrium. Instead of being buried inside the hull, the glass elevators here face outward toward the open water. Riding the elevator up to the top decks gives passengers a sweeping, panoramic view of the passing coastline or open ocean—a favorite photo spot for cruisers at sunset. 3. Powered by Modified Jet Engines From an engineering standpoint, Brilliance of the Seas is fundamentally different from most cruise ships. Instead of relying purely on heavy, traditional diesel engines, she is outfitted with two General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines—which are essentially modified aircraft jet engines. Why this matters for travelers: Gas turbines burn much cleaner fuel, dramatically reducing emissions and environmental impact. More importantly for guests, they run exceptionally quiet and cause almost zero hull vibration, resulting in an incredibly smooth ride even when cruising at top speeds of 25 knots. 4. The Climate-Shifting Solarium Dome While newer mega-ships have massive outdoor water parks, the Radiance-class layout excels at destination flexibility due to its adults-only Solarium. Designed with a distinct African safari theme—complete with large stone elephants and lush greenery—this indoor pool retreat features a fully retractable glass roof. If the ship is sailing a tropical Caribbean itinerary, the glass opens to let in the ocean breeze. If the vessel repositions to a colder climate like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords, the roof closes completely, creating a perfectly heated, climate-controlled paradise where guests can swim while watching glaciers pass by outside. 5. A Custom-Built "Panamax" Design Brilliance of the Seas was engineered to a precise size specification known in the maritime world as Panamax. This means her length (292 meters) and beam (32.2 meters) were built to the exact maximum limits allowed to squeeze through the original locks of the Panama Canal. Because she strikes the sweet spot of being large enough for extensive entertainment options but small enough to handle restricted waterways, she frequently gets assigned to unique, destination-heavy world itineraries that Royal Caribbean's massive Oasis or Icon-class ships physically cannot reach. Sun Princess Ultimate Sun Princess Cruise Ship Guide & Review: Inside the Sphere Class Discover everything you need to know about the new Sun Princess. Explore our ultimate guide covering ship stats, dining, The Dome, Park19, and the best staterooms for stunning ocean views. Launched in early 2024, the Sun Princess is a groundbreaking addition to the Princess Cruises fleet. As the first vessel in the highly anticipated Sphere Class, she is the largest ship ever built for Princess—and the fleet's very first to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Boasting a revolutionary design centered around sweeping glass architecture, this ship is built to connect you directly with the ocean. From the multi-story glass Piazza to gravity-defying top-deck attractions, here is everything you need to know before you book your sailing. Standout Features & Architectural Marvels Princess completely reimagined its traditional layout for the Sun Princess, introducing several first-at-sea concepts and stunning spaces. The Dome Inspired by the terraced cliffs of Santorini, The Dome is a breathtaking glass-enclosed geodesic structure situated at the front of the ship. By day, it serves as a tranquil indoor/outdoor oasis featuring a cascading water feature and pool. By night, it transforms into a high-energy South Beach-style entertainment venue featuring cutting-edge aerial acrobatics created in partnership with Cirque Éloize. The Sphere Atrium (The Piazza) The heart of the ship is the three-story Piazza, encased in a massive outward-bowing glass sphere. This architectural marvel floods the central gathering space with natural light and offers uninterrupted panoramic views of the ocean. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee at Coffee Currents, enjoy a drink at Bellini's, and listen to live music while watching the world go by. Park19: Top-Deck Adrenaline Located aft on Decks 19 through 21, Park19 is a multi-generational activity zone loaded with nine distinct attractions: Sea Breeze: The first-ever Rollglider at sea. Sit in a harness and zip along an overhead track at speeds up to 11 mph, suspended high above the ocean. Infinite Horizon: Lean against tilted glass walls cantilevered over the side of the ship, allowing you to peer directly down ten decks to the waves below. Coastal Climb: A massive climbing structure that takes you from Deck 19 to Deck 20, ending at "The Lookout" for unobstructed 360-degree views. Spellbound by Magic Castle A truly unique addition is Spellbound, a Victorian-themed parlor created in partnership with Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle. Tucked behind a hidden black door, this venue blends world-class close-up magic with theatrical, sleight-of-hand mixology in an incredibly immersive environment. Dining: 29+ Bars and Restaurants The Sun Princess elevates dining with over 29 venues, ranging from casual bites to ultra-premium specialty experiences. Alfredo’s Pizzeria: A Princess staple, now featuring an open kitchen and authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas baked in a massive oven. Staterooms & Balconies With 2,157 cabins onboard, the Sun Princess leans heavily into outdoor space—over 1,500 staterooms feature balconies. For those who love ship spotting and port watching, the layout of this ship is a dream. The abundance of glass and outward-facing architecture means you are rarely without a view. If a great vantage point of the harbor is essential for you, the Cabana Mini-Suites are highly recommended. These feature a private, resort-style outdoor lounge space (a cabana) separating the room from the traditional balcony, giving you an expansive, comfortable area to track local vessel movements and take in sweeping bay views. At the very top end, the ship features 80 suites, including the massive 1,200-square-foot Sky Suite, which offers exclusive access to the Sanctuary Collection amenities. Sun Princess Entertainment & Nightlife: Shows, Bars, and The Magic Castle Discover the ultimate guide to entertainment and nightlife on the Sun Princess. From the technologically advanced Princess Arena and Cirque Éloize in The Dome to the exclusive Spellbound by Magic Castle. Main Theaters & Production Shows Princess has introduced new venues and updated fan-favorite spaces to deliver next-generation performances. The Princess Arena Replacing the traditional Princess Theater, the Princess Arena is the most technologically advanced performance space in the fleet. This dynamic theater features a retractable stage and can be configured in three different ways: traditional proscenium, in-the-round, or a 270-degree keyhole setup. Highlight Shows in the Arena: Viva La Música: A high-energy, immersive Latin music showcase featuring hits from Gloria Estefan, Camila Cabello, and Santana, complete with incredible ballroom choreography. Vallora, A Pirate Quest: An adventurous, nostalgic production set to an upbeat 80s soundtrack including Eurythmics, Survivor, and Chicago. Fiera!: A beautifully reimagined love story set in a turn-of-the-century European fairground, featuring a medley of popular hits like Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine." Stage Struck: A massive celebration of musical theater featuring iconic numbers from Rent, Dreamgirls, and My Fair Lady. 🤫 The Walking Cruiser's Top Insider Secrets for Sun Princess Master the Sun Princess with our insider tips and secrets. Learn where to find the best wake views, how to book Spellbound, and the smartest times to secure a seat in The Dome. A ship as massive and innovative as the 4,300-passenger Sun Princess comes with a slight learning curve. While the sweeping architecture and incredible venues are easy to spot, maximizing your time onboard requires a bit of strategy. Whether you are looking for the ultimate vantage point for a sailaway or trying to score a seat at the most exclusive venue at sea, here are the insider secrets you need to know before you sail. 1. The Best Spots for Ship Watching & Photography For those who love tracking harbor vessel movements or capturing clean, wide-angle b-roll of the ship's wake, the Sun Princess offers several phenomenal vantage points: Sea View Terrace (Deck 17 Forward): Located just outside The Dome, this area is covered by a glass ceiling. It allows you to watch sailaways and port operations with perfect visibility without battling the wind. Cabana Mini-Suites: If an unobstructed vantage point of the port is essential for you, the Cabana Mini-Suites on Deck 9 are a game-changer. They feature a unique indoor/outdoor cabana lounge that leads out to a private balcony, giving you an expansive space to relax and watch passing ships. Wake View Infinity Pool (Deck 8 Aft): The ultimate spot for unobstructed aft views. Grab a coffee and head here early in the morning to film the sunrise over the ship's wake. 2. Crack the Code on Entertainment Bookings The Sphere Class completely overhauled entertainment, shifting away from massive theaters to more intimate, immersive venues. Spellbound is a Tough Ticket: The Magic Castle speakeasy experience is the most exclusive venue on the ship. Because the secret theater only holds about 30 people per show, you must book this the absolute second you board (or via the Medallion app beforehand if available). It sells out almost instantly. Queue Early for The Dome: The Cirque Éloize shows (like Artbeat) in The Dome are incredible, but the venue's lounge seating only accommodates about 250 people per showing. You need to line up at least 30 to 45 minutes early to secure a good seat. 3. Capturing Empty-Ship Content If you are trying to film clean ship tours or take photos without crowds blocking the architecture, timing is everything. The three-story, glass-enclosed Piazza and The Dome are flooded with natural light early in the morning. Skip the late-night shoots; the absolute best time for pristine, uncrowded structural shots is between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, right before the line for Coffee Currents starts forming. 4. Finding the Quiet Zones With thousands of passengers, the main Lido decks (Decks 17 and 18) are bustling hubs of activity. Deck 9 Cabana Deck: If you book a Cabana Mini-Suite, you gain exclusive access to a sprawling outdoor deck space reserved only for those cabins. It remains remarkably quiet and relaxed compared to the upper decks. The Sanctuary: If you want total peace, this adults-only retreat is massive on the Sun Princess. However, note that Princess is transitioning this space so that it will primarily be reserved for guests staying in the premium Sanctuary Collection staterooms. 5. Dining & Drink Hacks O'Malley's Strategy: The resident band, The Rambling Rovers, draws a massive crowd every single night. If you want a table to enjoy your Guinness and pub food, do not wait until the music starts—arrive at least an hour early to claim a spot. Good Spirits at Sea: On the Sun Princess, this cocktail venue is finally a standalone bar tucked away in a corner. Unlike older ships in the fleet, you can order from the incredible specialty cocktail menu anytime the bar is open, not just during the scheduled mixology "shows." The Nieuw Statendam caters beautifully to travelers who appreciate a relaxed, premium travel rhythm. Nieuw Statendam Insider Tips, Hacks, and Hidden Secrets Every cruise ship has its quirks, shortcuts, and hidden gems that only frequent cruisers or crew members know about. If you are planning a voyage on Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam, these insider strategies will help you bypass the crowds, unlock free perks, and find the absolute best spots on board. 1. Secret Spots & Hidden Decks The Secret Bow Deck (Deck 5 Forward) If you want an unobstructed, wind-in-your-hair view for sailaways or entering scenic ports, head to Deck 5 all the way forward. Walk down the passenger hallway to the very front of the ship, and you will find a heavy, unmarked steel exterior door. Open it, and you’ll step out onto a massive, little-known observation deck right above the ship's bow. The Crow’s Nest Day Retreat Located at the top of the ship on Deck 12 forward, the Crow’s Nest is an incredible observation lounge during the day. It features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, massive plush leather chairs, and Navajo-print cushions. It houses the Explorations Central (EXC) interactive screens where you can track the ship's live nautical path, making it the quietest, most scenic spot on the ship to read a book or check emails. 2. Clever Dining & Beverage Hacks Free Treats at the Grand Dutch Café While the premium specialty coffees at the Grand Dutch Café (Deck 3) cost a nominal fee, almost all the food items are 100% complimentary. Do not miss out on the Bossche Bol—a massive, traditional Dutch cream puff completely covered in dark chocolate. They also serve free hot savory snacks like authentic Dutch bitterballen (crispy meat croquettes) and fresh Dutch apple pancakes. The Tamarind Bar Backdoor Can’t snag a prime-time reservation at Tamarind, the highly-rated specialty Pan-Asian restaurant? Head to the elegant Tamarind Bar tucked inside the venue on Deck 10 aft. Anyone can walk in without a reservation to enjoy a custom cocktail. Better yet, you can often order select small plates from the main Tamarind kitchen right to the bar counter. Skip the Lines at Dive-In and New York Pizza The custom burgers at Dive-In and fresh-baked personal pies at New York Pizza are arguably the most popular casual lunch spots on the ship, meaning long lines during peak sea days. The App Hack: Open the Holland America Navigator App while lounging on the pool deck. You can place your custom food order digitally and receive a push notification the exact moment your food is hot and ready for pickup, entirely skipping the physical queue. 3. Entertainment & Timing Strategies Sit in the Balcony at the World Stage The World Stage theater features a breathtaking, two-story, 270-degree LED screen that wraps around the audience. If you sit on the lower level (Deck 2) too close to the stage, you will constantly turn your head back and forth, missing the grand scale of the visuals. For the best sensory experience, head upstairs to the Deck 3 balcony seating, which gives you a perfect widescreen view of the entire production. The Music Walk "20-Minute Rule" Because the Nieuw Statendam lacks a massive, singular mega-theater show, the entire ship converges on the Music Walk (B.B. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard, and the Rolling Stone Rock Room) around 8:30 PM. The venues are intimate, and chairs fill up fast. To secure a table or a good spot near the dance floor, you must arrive at least 20 minutes before the band's designated start time. - Barcelona Cruise Port 2026: Terminal Guide & Getting to Town
Which terminal your ship uses, the cheapest way into the city, whether you can walk it, and the terminal change coming at the end of 2026. Barcelona Cruise Port Guide 2026: Terminals, Shuttle and Walking Distance Almost every cruise ship in Barcelona docks at Moll Adossat, a working industrial quay 1 to 2.5 miles south of the old town, and you should not plan on walking it. Take the T3 Portbus shuttle (€3 single, €4.50 return, about 10 minutes to the Columbus Monument) or a taxi. The one city-centre terminal, WTCB, closes at the end of 2026. So the terminal letter on your boarding pass genuinely changes the shape of your day. Here is what is true in 2026, what changes in 2027, and how to actually spend a port day here. Where does your cruise ship dock in Barcelona? Barcelona is an alongside port, so there is no tendering. Your ship berths at a terminal and you walk off the gangway straight onto the quay. Almost all cruise traffic uses Moll Adossat (the Adossat Quay), a long stretch of terminals south of the city centre near Montjuïc. One terminal, WTCB, sits on the Barcelona quay much closer to town, and that one is being phased out at the end of 2026. TERMINAL | LOCATION | PRIMARY CRUISE LINES & STATUS Terminals A & B | Moll Adossat | Royal Caribbean & others; active during shore power upgrades. Terminal C | Moll Adossat | Mixed cruise lines; scheduled for closure/demolition late 2026. Terminals D (Palacruceros) & E (Helix) | Moll Adossat | Carnival Corp brands: Carnival, Costa, AIDA, Princess Cruises. Terminal H | Moll Adossat | Dedicated MSC Cruises hub; the quay's most distant terminal. Terminal G | Moll Adossat | Royal Caribbean Group's future hub; scheduled to open in Spring 2027. WTCB (World Trade Center) | Barcelona Quay | Small vessels; city-center location closing permanently in late 2026. One correction worth making, because plenty of older guides still get this wrong: the WTC North terminal closed back in October 2023, and all its traffic moved out to Adossat. If a guide tells you small ships still berth at WTC North, it is out of date. Bottom line: check your cruise documents for the terminal letter, not just "Barcelona." It genuinely changes your plan for the day. Is Barcelona cruise port walkable? Only from WTCB, and not for much longer. From WTCB, yes. It is about a 15 minute walk to the bottom of La Rambla via the Columbus Monument, following the marina promenade past the Maremagnum shopping centre and the old port. Flat, well signed, and one of the more pleasant terminal walks in the Mediterranean. But WTCB closes at the end of 2026, so this stops being an option. From Moll Adossat, technically possible but not worth it. You are looking at 1 to 2.5 miles depending on the terminal, 25 to 45 minutes on foot, along a working port road with container cranes and traffic rather than architecture, and almost no shade. Terminal H, the MSC one, is the furthest out and genuinely not a fun walk with kids or luggage. The port authority itself points passengers at the shuttle instead. So from 2027, assume you are not walking. Budget for the shuttle or a taxi and do your walking once you are actually in the city. How do you get from Barcelona cruise port into the city? Three options, in the order most people use them. The T3 Portbus (Cruise Bus) . The easiest and most popular. It runs a continuous loop from all Moll Adossat terminals and drops you near the Christopher Columbus Monument at Torre de Jaume I. €3 single, €4.50 return, bought from the driver. The buses are wheelchair accessible. Note that your standard metro card or T10 travel pass is not valid on this service. Taxi . Ranks sit directly outside every terminal. About 10 minutes into the city centre. I paid around €25 from the terminal into town, which is worth knowing because most guides quote a vaguer range than that. Split between three or four of you it works out cheaper than the shuttle, and you get dropped exactly where you want rather than at the Columbus Monument. Metro . Not from the terminal directly. Once the Cruise Bus drops you at the Columbus Monument it is a short walk to Drassanes station on the L3 green line, which connects to Plaça de Catalunya and Park Güell. What is changing at Barcelona cruise port in 2026 and 2027? Barcelona is cutting its cruise terminals from seven down to five and moving every cruise operation out to the Adossat wharf, away from the city centre. The Port of Barcelona and Barcelona City Council signed the agreement in July 2025, committing €185 million on top of the €265 million already spent under an earlier 2018 deal. Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni described it as the first time a limit has been placed on the growth of cruising in the city, after passenger numbers rose 20% between 2018 and 2024. When What happens October 2023 WTC North closed. Around 340 cruise and ferry calls a year moved to Adossat End of 2026 WTCB (WTC South) closes, moving around 70 cruise calls a year. Terminal C demolition begins Spring 2027 Terminal G opens: €85 million, built and run by Royal Caribbean Group with Cruise Terminals International Second half of 2028 Demolition of Terminals A and B begins 2030 Replacement public terminal ready, capacity 7,000 passengers Terminal G covers 54,000 square metres with a 450 metre quay, long enough for the largest ships afloat, and is designed as a zero emissions building with solar panels and shore power connections. It is built specifically for homeport traffic, so if you are flying in to start a Royal Caribbean sailing from Barcelona in 2027 or later, that is likely where you check in. The practical upshot: if you read a Barcelona guide written before 2026 that tells you to walk into town from your ship, ignore it. From 2027 there is no city-centre cruise terminal left. How do you get from Barcelona airport to the cruise port? Josep Tarradellas Barcelona El Prat is about 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the port, and there is no direct train or metro to the cruise terminals. Taxi is the fastest and simplest, roughly 30 minutes depending on traffic, at a flat rate of around €45 including luggage for up to four passengers. Private transfer if you want a driver waiting in arrivals, which is worth it after a long haul flight with luggage. Public transport for the budget route: Aerobús from the airport to Plaça d'Espanya, L3 metro to Drassanes, walk to the Columbus Monument, then the T3 Portbus to your terminal. Cheap, but three changes with suitcases on embarkation morning. What can you do near the Barcelona cruise terminal? If you are short on time or the ship is only in for half a day, there is enough within reach of the shuttle drop-off to fill a few hours. Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom). The shuttle drop-off point and the literal starting line of La Rambla. Worth the lift up for the port views. Port Cable Car (Transbordador Aeri). Connects the port area to Montjuïc hill with dramatic views over the harbour. Round trip runs about €20. Maremagnum and Barcelona Aquarium. Shopping and dining right on the water at Port Vell, an easy stop straight off the shuttle. Barceloneta Beach. The closest real beach to the port. Good for an hour of sand and sea breeze if your ship is in over lunch. Gothic Quarter. About 15 to 20 minutes on foot beyond the Columbus Monument. Narrow medieval streets, small squares and the cathedral. How I spent my day in Barcelona I sailed out of Barcelona rather than calling in for the day, so I had more time than most people get. Here is what I actually did, and what I would tell you to prioritise if your ship is only in for eight hours. The sunset cruise the night before was my favourite thing in Barcelona . Not the cathedral, not the football. If you are flying in a day early to embark, do this. You get the city and the coastline from the water in the best light of the day, and it costs a fraction of anything similar you would book as a ship excursion. It is the one thing on this list I would tell someone not to skip. Sagrada Familia . Pre-book it. I did, and it is the difference between walking in and not getting in at all. Tickets are timed and digital only and they sell out well ahead, so this is not something you sort out on the morning. I filmed the whole thing, so if you want to see what you actually get for your ticket before you commit, the walkthrough is on my channel. Mercat de la Boqueria. I had tapas here and it was very good. It is right off La Rambla so it slots into any city walk without a detour, and it is a better lunch than anything you will find on the main drag itself. Camp Nou and the FC Barcelona museum. Honest verdict: good if you are into football. If you are not, this is the one to cut. It is a trek out from the centre and it will eat a big chunk of a port day, which is a lot to spend on a stadium tour you are lukewarm about. Football fans will love it. Everyone else, go to Sagrada Familia instead. Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla. I walked this myself rather than paying for a guided tour, and it was good. Save your money here. It is a straight line from Plaça de Catalunya down to the Columbus Monument, it is impossible to get lost, and the Gothic Quarter is right there when you want to duck off the main street. A paid walking tour of this stretch is one of the easier things to skip. So if you only have one port day: Sagrada Familia, pre-booked, then walk La Rambla down to La Boqueria for lunch and finish in the Gothic Quarter. That is a full, comfortable day that does not have you sprinting for the shuttle. Camp Nou only if football is your thing. And if you are in town the night before, the sunset cruise beats all of it. What are the best day trips from Barcelona cruise port? Three realistic options, and you can only do one. Montserrat Monastery. The classic Barcelona day trip and doable on a single port day. Metro to Plaça Espanya, then the R5 train to Aeri de Montserrat or Monistrol de Montserrat (about an hour), then a cable car or rack railway up the mountain. Round-trip train plus cable car runs around €26. Budget at least five hours door to door independently, and aim to be back at the ship two hours before all aboard. Girona or Figueres . For art and medieval streets rather than mountains. High speed trains from Barcelona Sants reach Girona in about 40 minutes, with its walled old town and cathedral steps. Figueres, home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by direct train. Pick one, not both, if you are working around a cruise schedule. Sitges . The low-effort option if you just want beach time and a change of pace from the city. Roughly 30 to 45 minutes each way by train from Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia. For any of these, remember you are adding the transfer from the port into central Barcelona first, so pad your schedule. Cruise line excursions build that buffer in for you, which is worth the premium if your port day is tight. Barcelona cruise port: frequently asked questions Where do cruise ships dock in Barcelona? Almost all cruise ships dock at Moll Adossat (the Adossat Quay), which has terminals A, B, C, D, E and H, with Terminal G opening in 2027. Moll Adossat sits 1 to 2.5 miles south of the city centre. One terminal, WTCB, is on the Barcelona quay near the Columbus Monument, but it closes at the end of 2026. Is Barcelona a tender port? No. Barcelona is an alongside port, so your ship berths directly at a terminal and you walk off the gangway onto the quay. There is no tendering. Can you walk from Barcelona cruise terminal to the city centre? From WTCB, yes, about 15 minutes along the marina promenade to the bottom of La Rambla. From the Moll Adossat terminals it is 1 to 2.5 miles along a working port road with little shade, taking 25 to 45 minutes, and most passengers take the shuttle instead. WTCB closes at the end of 2026, after which walking is not a realistic option from any terminal. How much is the Barcelona cruise port shuttle bus? The T3 Portbus costs €3 for a single trip and €4.50 return, bought from the driver. It loops continuously between the Moll Adossat terminals and the Columbus Monument, takes about 10 minutes, and is wheelchair accessible. Your metro card or T10 pass is not valid on it. Which terminal will my ship use in Barcelona? It depends on the cruise line and can change close to sailing. Terminals D and E serve Carnival Corporation brands including Carnival, Costa, AIDA and Princess. MSC uses its dedicated Terminal H. Royal Caribbean currently uses Terminals A and B, moving to the new Terminal G from 2027. Always check the terminal letter printed on your boarding pass. Is Barcelona cruise port closing? No, but it is shrinking from seven cruise terminals to five under a July 2025 agreement between the Port of Barcelona and Barcelona City Council. WTCB closes at the end of 2026, Terminal C is demolished from late 2026, and Terminals A and B come down from the second half of 2028. When does Barcelona Terminal G open? Spring 2027. It is an €85 million terminal built and operated by Royal Caribbean Group with Cruise Terminals International, covering 54,000 square metres with a 450 metre quay, designed mainly for cruises that start and end in Barcelona. How far is Barcelona airport from the cruise port? About 15 kilometres (9 miles), roughly 30 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, at a flat rate of around €45 for up to four passengers including luggage. There is no direct train or metro from the airport to the terminals. How long do you need in Barcelona on a port day? Allow around an hour of your day for transfers in and out of the port. A typical 8am to 6pm call leaves roughly eight usable hours, enough for either one major sight plus a wander, or a single day trip such as Montserrat. Trying to fit Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and Camp Nou into one call is not realistic. Do you need to book Sagrada Familia tickets in advance from a cruise? Yes. Entry is timed and digital only, and slots routinely sell out days or weeks ahead. There are no walk-up tickets at the gate. Book before you sail and choose a slot that leaves plenty of margin before all aboard. I pre-booked mine and it is the one booking I would not leave to chance. How much is a taxi from Barcelona cruise port to the city centre? Around €25 from the terminal into town, taking roughly 10 minutes. Taxi ranks sit directly outside every terminal. Split between three or four passengers it works out cheaper than the €3 per person shuttle, and it drops you exactly where you want rather than at the Columbus Monument. Is Camp Nou worth visiting on a cruise port day? Only if you are genuinely interested in football. The FC Barcelona museum and stadium tour are good, but it is a long way out from the centre and it will take a substantial chunk of an eight hour port day. If football is not your thing, spend that time on Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter instead. Do you need a guided walking tour of La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter? No. La Rambla runs in a straight line from Plaça de Catalunya down to the Columbus Monument, and the Gothic Quarter sits immediately off it, so this stretch is easy to walk unguided. I did it myself and it worked well. Save the money for something you cannot do on your own. Related Video
