Whether you are planning a bucket-list Alaskan expedition or a sun-soaked Pacific journey, this ship offers a refined, mid-sized cruising experience free from the overwhelming crowds of modern mega-ships. Technical Specifications Before diving into the onboard experience, here is a quick look at the ship's core statistics. Its mid-sized footprint allows it to navigate scenic, narrower waterways (like Alaska's Inside Passage) while still offering expansive onboard venues. 82,318 GT Gross Tonnage 1,924 Maximum Passenger Capacity 800 Crew Size 2006 Year Built Holland America Line Cruise Line Rotterdam, Netherlands Home Port Dining & Culinary Experiences Holland America Line is celebrated for its culinary excellence, and the Noordam delivers a rich variety of dining options, from elegant multi-course meals to casual poolside bites. The menu features classic cruise fare, regional specialties based on the itinerary, and vegetarian/vegan options. Pinnacle Grill: The ship’s premier specialty steakhouse. For a cover charge, guests can enjoy premium cuts of beef, sustainably sourced seafood, and an extensive, award-winning wine list. Canaletto: An authentic, family-style Italian restaurant located in a dedicated section of the Lido Market. Perfect for sharing hearty pastas and classic Italian desserts. Lido Market: A modern, casual marketplace featuring curated food stations rather than a traditional buffet. Grab freshly baked bread, custom salads, carved meats, and international dishes. Dive-In: Located by the Lido pool, this is the go-to spot for gourmet burgers, Nathan’s Famous hot dogs, and perfectly seasoned French fries. Entertainment & Onboard Activities he Noordam focuses on cultural enrichment, world-class live music, and relaxation rather than water slides and go-karts. The Music Walk Experience Holland America is famous for the "Music Walk," a collection of venues offering the best live music at sea: B.B. King's Blues Club: An eight-piece band brings the soulful sounds of Memphis directly to the ocean, playing R&B, funk, and classic blues. Billboard Onboard: Two dueling pianists play chart-topping hits spanning several decades, encouraging crowd participation and singalongs. Enrichment and Relaxation Museum-Quality Art Collection: The ship is a floating gallery. Take a self-guided walking tour to view 19th-century oil paintings, contemporary photography, and historical maritime artifacts. Greenhouse Spa & Salon: A tranquil sanctuary offering heated ceramic loungers, hydrotherapy pools, and a full menu of massage and facial treatments. Explorations Café: Powered by The New York Times, this is a cozy library and coffeehouse hybrid where you can read, play board games, or enjoy panoramic ocean views. Staterooms & Suites Accommodations on the Noordam are designed with classic maritime touches, including signature Mariner's Dream™ beds and plush Euro-top mattresses. Inside Staterooms: T he most budget-friendly option, offering cozy, well-appointed spaces without a window. Oceanview Staterooms: Featuring a large picture window, these rooms allow natural light and beautiful views of the passing scenery. Verandah Staterooms: The most popular category. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to a private balcony, perfect for viewing glaciers or tropical sunsets. Signature & Neptune Suites: For those seeking luxury, suites offer vastly expanded square footage, oversized balconies, dual-sink vanities, and exclusive access to the Neptune Lounge (for Neptune Suite guests). Expert Insider Tips for the MS Noordam Want to cruise like a seasoned Holland America Mariner? Keep these secret workarounds and ship-specific quirks in mind to maximize your time onboard the Noordam. 1. The Deck 5 Balcony Exception If you love aft-facing views, pay close attention to the deck plans. On most of Holland America's Vista-class ships, the aft balconies on Deck 5 are fully covered by the deck above. However, the Noordam is the exception — its Deck 5 aft balconies are entirely uncovered. If you prefer a shaded retreat to avoid the sun or rain, you will want to book your aft stateroom on Deck 4 or Deck 6 instead. 2. The "Curved" Suite Trade-Off The exterior architecture of the Vista-class features a distinct curve toward the aft of the ship. Staterooms located right on this curve (such as S7087 and S7088) offer a unique trade-off: the interior cabin space is slightly smaller than a standard suite, but the balconies are massive and wrap around the hull, offering incredible panoramic views. 3. Skip the Dive-In Line Dive-In serves some of the best gourmet burgers and fries at sea, meaning the line by the Lido pool can get long during peak lunch hours. To bypass the queue entirely, open the Holland America Navigator App, place your custom order digitally, and simply walk up to the counter when your food is ready to be picked up. 4. Ask for the "Crew Food" If you build a good rapport with your servers in the Main Dining Room or Lido Market, politely ask if there is any "crew food" available that day. The culinary team frequently prepares highly authentic regional dishes — often Filipino or Indian curries and stews — specifically for the staff. If there is extra, they are usually thrilled to share these off-menu dishes with interested guests. 5. Find the Acoustic Chamber The Noordam features a fun architectural quirk hidden in plain sight. In certain circular spaces on the ship with domed ceilings, there is an "acoustic chamber" effect. If you stand directly dead-center under the light fixture and speak, your voice will bounce back to you as if you are trapped inside a sealed chamber, yet anyone standing just a few feet away won't hear the echo at all. - Star Princess | Cruise Ships Guide
Explore the ultimate Star Princess cruise guide. Discover Star Princess itineraries, amenities, and tips for an unforgettable voyage. Star Princess Star Princess: Everything You Need to Know About Princess Cruises' Newest Icon Princess Cruises is officially ushering in a bold new era of modern cruising with Star Princess, the second magnificent vessel in the cruise line's next-generation Sphere Class. As the sister ship to the widely acclaimed Sun Princess, this stunning mega-ship blends the classic heritage of the "Love Boat" line with futuristic architecture and eco-friendly technology. Whether you are tracking its latest itineraries or planning your next cruise vacation, here is the ultimate breakdown of everything this innovative ship brings to the high seas. Architectural Marvels: Next-Level Onboard Spaces What truly sets the Star Princess apart from older ships in the fleet is its focus on outward-facing glass design, bringing guests closer to the ocean than ever before. Two revolutionary venues anchor the ship's social and entertainment scenes: 1. The Dome Inspired by the sun-drenched, terraced cliffs of Santorini, The Dome is a multi-level, top-deck venue enclosed in the first-ever fully glass dome built on a cruise ship. By Day: It functions as a serene, indoor-outdoor pool deck perfect for relaxing and soaking in daylight. By Night: The pool transforms into a state-of-the-art stage where the water is covered to host spellbinding aerial performances by talent like Cirque Éloize. 2. A Reimagined Piazza The multi-story Piazza remains the beating heart of the ship, but on the Star Princess, it is elevated by a massive, dramatic glass sphere. This architectural choice floods the entire central atrium with natural light and offers sweeping, panoramic ocean views while you enjoy live music, specialty coffee, or a pre-dinner cocktail. Culinary Highlights: Over 30 Dining Options Food lovers will find themselves spoiled for choice. Star Princess boasts a stellar lineup of over 30 distinct food and beverage venues, ranging from casual poolside bites to upscale, immersive specialty dining. Included, Complimentary Favorites The Main Dining Rooms (Soleil & Eclipse): Striking, multi-story dining rooms positioned at the aft of the ship to deliver unforgettable wake views while you eat. Americana Diner: A relaxed, comfortable spot serving up classic, hearty American comfort foods all day long. The Eatery: A completely reimagined buffet concept designed to keep crowds moving smoothly while serving diverse international flavors. World-Class Specialty Venues Crown Grill: The cruise line's signature premium steakhouse, offering top-tier cuts of beef and seafood in a sophisticated atmosphere. The Catch by Rudi: A seafood-forward specialty concept developed by celebrated master chef Rudi Sodamin. The Butcher's Block by Dario: A unique, meat-centric culinary experience created in partnership with world-famous Italian butcher Dario Cecchini. Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria: A fan-favorite destination serving fresh, handmade pasta and authentic Italian recipes. Sustainable Cruising: Powered by LNG Beyond the glitz and glamour of the entertainment decks, Star Princess represents a massive leap forward in maritime engineering. It is the second ship in the Princess fleet to be fully powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This advanced clean-energy technology drastically cuts carbon emissions and minimizes the ship's environmental footprint, making it one of the most eco-friendly mega-ships sailing today. The MedallionClass Advantage: Like all modern Princess vessels, Star Princess utilizes wearable OceanMedallion technology. This quarter-sized device replaces your traditional cruise card, allowing for hands-free cabin door unlocking, contactless payments, and on-demand food/drink delivery wherever you are standing on the ship. Redefining Luxury: Staterooms and Suites on Star Princess After a long day of exploring ports or lounging by the pool, the accommodations on Star Princess offer a perfect, relaxing retreat. The ship features 2,162 staterooms, designed with modern aesthetics, premium linens, and spacious layouts. Princess has introduced several new, highly sought-after categories for the Sphere Class that you will want to look out for: The Sanctuary Collection & Signature Suites Replacing the traditional suite tiers, the Sanctuary Collection is the ultimate VIP experience. Guests booked in these top-tier suites receive exclusive access to a private restaurant, an exclusive lounge, and a dedicated sun deck. Signature Sky Suite: The crown jewel of the ship, offering massive square footage, sweeping panoramic views, and luxury amenities for up to four guests. Signature Penthouse & Grand Suites: These feature expansive balconies, separate living spaces, and spa-quality bathrooms. The Cabana Mini-Suites One of the most innovative new cabin designs on the ship is the Cabana Mini-Suite. These resort-style rooms feature a standard balcony plus an attached private outdoor cabana lounge. It bridges the gap between indoor and outdoor living, giving passengers a massive private patio area complete with premium lounge furniture. Balcony and Interior Options Even if you aren't booking a suite, the standard cabins have been significantly upgraded. Over 70% of the ship's staterooms feature a private balcony. For budget-conscious travelers, the inside cabins offer a smartly designed, quiet base of operations equipped with the same high-quality Princess Luxury Beds found in the suites. Entertainment & Nightlife: Pushing the Boundaries Princess Cruises is known for its classic production shows, but Star Princess elevates the nightlife with immersive, technologically advanced venues. The Princess Arena: This is not your standard cruise ship theater. The Princess Arena is a highly advanced, in-the-round entertainment space. The stage and seating can be completely reconfigured to host traditional Broadway-style musicals, high-energy concerts, or intimate cabaret performances. Spellbound by Magic Castle: A truly unique partnership with Hollywood's famous Magic Castle, this Victorian-themed lounge offers an evening of close-up illusions, theatrical cocktails, and mysterious parlor tricks hidden behind a secret door. Cirque Éloize at The Dome: As the sun goes down, the glass-enclosed Dome on the top deck transforms into an acrobatic theater. Partnering with the renowned Cirque Éloize, the ship features gravity-defying aerial performances perfectly integrated into the ship's architecture. 🤫 The Walking Cruiser's Top Insider Secrets for Star Princess To truly master the Star Princess, you need to look past the standard deck plans. After digging into the layout of this massive Sphere-class ship, here are the top insider tips and hidden hacks to maximize your vacation: 1. Escape the Breakfast Crowds at the Americana Diner The Eatery (the ship's massive reimagined buffet) gets notoriously congested during peak breakfast hours. Skip the lines and head down to the Americana Diner on Deck 8 (the top tier of the aft dining rooms). They serve hearty, sit-down comfort food and all-day breakfast in a much quieter, relaxed atmosphere. It is the perfect hidden refuge on busy port mornings. 2. The Best Spot for Ship Spotters For fellow ship spotters and port enthusiasts, you do not have to fight for railing space on the chaotic top pool decks to get a great view of vessel movements and pilot boats. Head straight to the Sea View Terrace at the aft of the ship. It offers spectacular, unobstructed wake views, a smaller pool, and a significantly more laid-back vibe than the main Lido deck. 3. Seek Out the Hidden "Black Door" on Deck 8 If you want the most exclusive nightlife experience on the ship, you need to find Spellbound by Magic Castle. It requires an extra cover charge, but it grants you access to a Victorian-themed speakeasy hidden behind an unmarked black door on Deck 8. Inside, you will find world-class close-up magic, secret rooms, and theatrical cocktails you cannot get anywhere else on the ship (ask for the "Escape From Houdini's Chest"). 4. Hack the High-Tech Cabin Lights The staterooms on Star Princess are beautifully modernized and feature motion-sensor floor lighting designed to help you navigate to the bathroom in the dark. The catch? They are incredibly sensitive and can trigger just from you rolling over in your sleep. Pro tip: If you are a light sleeper, pack a small roll of painter's tape or a few sticky notes to cover the sensors at night. 5. Master the "Smart Elevators" Like her sister ship, Star Princess utilizes a destination-based smart elevator system. You select your deck on a digital kiosk in the lobby before getting in, and it assigns you a specific car. During peak times—like right after a show ends in the Princess Arena—the elevator banks get heavily congested. If you are physically able, book a mid-ship cabin on Deck 11 or 12. This perfectly centralizes you, meaning you are only ever a few flights of stairs away from the food or the entertainment, allowing you to bypass the elevator queues entirely. Expanded Sun Decks: Both the adults-only Vibe Beach Club and the exclusive Haven Sundeck have been significantly expanded, adding more premium seating and private cabanas. Fresh Aesthetics: The ship received a massive exterior repaint making the iconic New York skyline hull art by Peter Max pop once again along with fresh, plush carpeting throughout the interior public spaces. Le Bistro: NCL's signature elegant French restaurant, perfect for a romantic evening. With 22 bars and lounges onboard, you are never far from a perfectly crafted cocktail. Grab a drink at the ice-cold SVEDKA Ice Bar, sip whiskey at Malting's, or enjoy classic rock at Syd Norman's Pour House. Staterooms & Accommodations The Norwegian Breakaway features 2,014 cabins designed to fit every budget and travel style, complete with modern, energy-efficient lighting and flat-screen TVs. Solo Traveler Studios: NCL is an industry pioneer for solo cruisers. These 9–12 square meter interior cabins are priced for one person (no single supplement) and grant access to an exclusive, keycard-entry Studio Lounge. Balcony & Mini-Suites: Making up a large portion of the ship's inventory, these rooms range from 18 to 54 square meters. They offer private outdoor spaces to enjoy your morning coffee with uninterrupted ocean views. The Haven by Norwegian: The ultimate luxury "ship-within-a-ship" concept. Mandara Spa & Thermal Suite: A massive oasis of relaxation offering everything from hot stone massages to a vitality pool and a salt room. Award-Winning Shows: The Breakaway Theater hosts Broadway-caliber production shows, while Headliners Comedy Club keeps the laughs coming late into the night. 6 Insider Secrets for the Norwegian Breakaway Even if you have sailed on mega-ships before, the Norwegian Breakaway has a few hidden quirks and quiet corners that most passengers never discover until the last day of their sailing. Here are the insider hacks to elevate your experience: 1. The Best Vantage Point for Ship Spotters If you love watching port operations, pilot boat transfers, or photographing passing vessels, skip the crowded upper decks and head to The Waterfront on Deck 8. Walk all the way toward the aft (back) of the promenade, specifically on the port side. Because the hull curves inward as it drops to the waterline, this spot gives you an unobstructed, straight-down view of pilot boats doing touch-and-gos. It also offers completely glare-free sightlines for capturing photos of passing ships, away from the heavy foot traffic. 2. The "Secret" Padded Loungers on Deck 16 Getting a premium, cushioned lounger usually means paying for a Vibe Beach Club pass, but there is a free workaround. Head up to Deck 16 and look along the inside of the jogging track, near the American Diner and the video arcade. You will find a small row of upgraded, padded loungers that are completely complimentary. Better yet, they are almost entirely shaded, making them a perfect escape from the midday sun. 3. How to Beat the Breakfast Buffet Chaos The Garden Café buffet gets notoriously busy during the morning rush. Instead of fighting for a table, use one of these two workarounds: The American Diner Overflow: Head to Deck 16. The American Diner operates as an overflow breakfast buffet every morning. It offers a slightly smaller selection than the main buffet, but it features the exact same hot food items with zero lines and plenty of open seating. The "Deep Aft" Strategy: If you do go to the Garden Café, bypass the first few stations completely. The lines for the omelet stations at the front are always the longest, but identical, empty stations are hiding at the very back of the ship. (Make sure to grab the French toast back there it is made fresh on-site with thick-cut bread). 4. The Hidden Espresso Machine This tip is exclusively for solo cruisers. If you are booked in a Studio cabin (which grants you keycard access to the Studio Lounge on Deck 10), you have access to the only complimentary, self-serve espresso machine on the ship. While the rest of the ship relies on standard drip coffee at the buffet, Studio guests can make lattes, cappuccinos, or pull straight espresso shots to fuel long port days. 5. Never Pay for the "Beer Bucket" Workouts NCL heavily promotes their beer buckets buy five, get the sixth free. While it saves you a few dollars, the physical bucket is heavy, sloshes ice water everywhere, and is incredibly cumbersome if you like to roam the ship or walk The Waterfront. Unless you are locking down a table at Spice H2O for the entire afternoon, skip the bucket and buy individual drinks so your hands remain free. 6. The 3:00 PM Snack Sweet Spot Norwegian doesn’t officially advertise a formal "Afternoon Tea," but they quietly roll out a mid-afternoon snack service every day around 3:00 PM in the buffet. It marks the quietest time in the dining areas and features mini sandwiches, fresh scones with cream and jam, and small cakes. It is the perfect bridge between a long shore excursion and a late dinner reservation. Emporium Marketplace: Forget the traditional cruise buffet. This is an upscale, all-day food hall bathed in natural light, featuring 18 separate cooking stations including made-to-order pasta, fresh sushi, a daily rotisserie, and an artisanal fromagerie. Marble & Co. Grill: A redefined European steakhouse serving exceptional, sustainably farmed cuts of beef. The venue features an in-house dry ager and a cellar boasting a superb selection of fine wines. Sakura: An immersive Pan-Asian dining experience offering Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian dishes. Enjoy fresh sushi and teppanyaki-style dishes with expansive ocean views. Med Yacht Club: A relaxed, beachside-inspired venue celebrating the varied cuisines of the Mediterranean, infusing tastes and textures from Italy, Spain, Greece, and France. Fil Rouge: A sophisticated, intimate restaurant offering a global tasting tour of French-inspired international cuisine, complete with an elegant tableside dessert cart. Anthology (Additional Fee): The only restaurant on board requiring an extra charge. Anthology features rotating tasting menus curated by some of the world's most celebrated guest chefs. EXPLORA II Emporium Marketplace EXPLORA II Sakura Onboard Lifestyle: Pools, Lounges, and Wellness The Explora II is designed to seamlessly connect guests with the sea. The ship features four distinct pools, including the magnificent Conservatory Pool (covered by a retractable glass roof for all-weather swimming) and the Astern Pool, an infinity-style pool at the aft of the ship offering a chic beach club vibe. For relaxation, the Ocean Wellness complex spans over 7,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, offering bespoke spa treatments, a thermal suite, and a state-of-the-art fitness center featuring outdoor cycling and Pilates. The Walking Cruiser Spotting Tip: If you are ship spotting at the port, look for the Explora II’s distinctive navy-blue hull and sleek, yacht-like profile. Unlike the towering, boxy megaships, her superstructure is streamlined and swept back, giving her a highly elegant silhouette even while docked. EXPLORA II Pools The Best Bars & Lounges on Explora II Explora Journeys deliberately avoids the massive, booming theater productions found on mainstream lines. Instead, the evening vibe revolves around sophisticated lounges, exceptional mixology, and live acoustic music. These are the venues your readers will care about most: The Malt Whisky Bar: A dream for spirits enthusiasts. This dark, wood-accented lounge features an incredible list of rare, global whiskies. It boasts a walk-in humidor, an onboard cigar expert to guide your selections, and a dedicated outdoor smoking terrace. Sky Bar on 14: Perched high on the aft of Deck 14, this is the ultimate spot for sailaway. It features 360-degree panoramic views of the ocean, a laid-back cocktail menu, and an elegant outdoor setup where the ship's resident DJ spins chill lounge tracks as the ship departs the port. The Explora Lounge: The ship’s primary forward-facing observation lounge. Bathed in natural light with 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows, it serves barista-made coffees by day, a traditional British afternoon tea, and transitions into a smooth jazz bar anchored by a gorgeous Steinway piano at sunset. Astern Lounge: Located right next to the aft infinity pool, this lounge is the heartbeat of the ship's social life. Every evening features a "Golden Hour" aperitivo ritual that transitions effortlessly into a lively night spot with acoustic musicians and late-night DJ sets. EXPLORA II Astern Lounge EXPLORA II Explora I vs. Explora II: Spotting the Subtle Differences While they are structurally identical sister ships, Explora Journeys used a full year of guest feedback from Explora I to tweak and perfect Explora II. If your readers are trying to decide between the two, or if you are trying to identify them from the pier, here are the exact changes to look out for: The White Blossom Canopy in Sakura The stunning Pan-Asian restaurant, Sakura, features a massive, immersive ceiling canopy of artificial cherry blossoms. On Explora I, these blossoms are a vibrant pink. On Explora II, they have been changed to a crisp, elegant white. The layout was also slightly adjusted to remove a few bulky booths, creating a more open layout with flexible seating. Rolex vs. Buccellati Explora I made waves in the maritime world by hosting the only official Rolex boutique at sea. For Explora II, the cruise line switched directions, replacing the Rolex space with the first-ever Buccellati luxury jewelry boutique at sea (though luxury mainstays like Cartier and Piaget remain on both ships). Upgraded Pool Deck Shade & Cabanas One of the chief complaints on the first ship was a lack of shade during hot days at sea. Explora II fixed this by installing permanent, enhanced awnings over the large lounger beds at both the aft Astern Pool and the forward Helios Pool. Furthermore, the private daybeds now feature adjustable, semi-transparent fabric privacy panels. More Flow at Crema Café & Public Spaces To cut down on morning lines, the popular Crema Café on Deck 5 was upgraded with a second high-end espresso machine and reconfigured with intimate, conversational sofa seating rather than single chairs. Here is a curated list of true insider tips and hidden strategies for Explora II: 1. The 6:30 PM "Seafood & Champagne" Pre-Dinner Hack The Emporium Marketplace opens for dinner at 6:30 PM. While most guests hold out for late specialty dining reservations around 8:30 PM, smart travelers head to the Marketplace early. The Move: Pop in right at opening for a luxury pre-dinner appetizer. They serve unlimited fresh oysters, crab legs, lobster tails, and chilled mussels. Grab a plate, ask a server for a glass of the complimentary premium champagne, and enjoy a high-end seafood starter before heading to your formal reservation later. 2. Locate the Underutilized Outdoor Deck Spaces Because the ship is so spacious, several premium outdoor areas are completely overlooked by the average guest: The Emporium Back Terrace: Directly behind the Emporium Marketplace is a stunning, heavily shaded outdoor seating area. Most guests eat inside near the stations, leaving this panoramic aft-view terrace completely empty. It has its own dedicated drink servers who will bring you whatever you need. Sakura’s Side Deck: Sakura isn’t just for dinner. They open for lunch offering fresh, made-to-order Tuna Poke Bowls and gourmet Bento boxes. Take your plate out to the adjacent outdoor side deck for a quiet, ocean-breeze lunch away from the main pool crowds. 3. The Port Day Thermal Spa Loophole Unlike mainstream cruise lines that charge up to $70 a day for a thermal pass, access to the Ocean Wellness Thermal Suite is 100% complimentary for all guests on Explora II. This includes the hydrotherapy pool, salt room, steam room, Finnish sauna, and heated marble loungers. The Strategy: To have this ultra-luxury facility entirely to yourself, book your spa time between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM on a port day. While everyone else is off the ship on excursions, the thermal suite transforms into a completely private, silent sanctuary. 4. The "Tip-as-You-Go" Reality Because Explora II completely abandons the traditional "Main Dining Room" model, you do not keep the same waiter throughout your cruise. You will likely see different crew members every single night at dinner and at the various bars. The Tip: Your room steward is the only crew member you will build a consistent, daily relationship with. Because gratuities are prepaid and built into the cruise fare, the crew does not expect extra money—but if a bartender or waiter gives you spectacular service, slip them a cash tip right then and there, as you may not see them again at the end of the voyage. 5. Secret Menu Items & "Must-Orders" Train your readers to ask for these specific, standout items that get rave reviews from past passengers: At the Malt Whisky Bar: Order a Smoked Manhattan. The bartenders here don't just stir it; they use a literal smoke-infusion dome cloche at the bar, turning the cocktail into a theatrical visual experience (perfect for an Instagram Reel or YouTube Short). At the Med Yacht Club: Skip the heavier desserts and order the Semifreddo. It is widely considered by ship regulars to be the absolute finest dessert across the entire fleet. At the Explora Lounge: Between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, they host a flawless traditional high tea with a live pianist. Ask the server for the Salmon Poke Bowl if you missed lunch—they keep a hidden supply of fresh, light savory bowls behind the counter during afternoon service. 6. Watch the Hot Tub Curfew The forward-facing whirlpools on Deck 12 offer some of the most spectacular, uninterrupted infinite views of the ocean. However, unlike the main pools, the ship's security team typically locks down and covers the hot tubs by 8:00 PM. Advise your readers to plan their luxury soaking sessions during the late afternoon "Golden Hour" or right at sunset to avoid missing out. EXPLORA II Deck Plans Preview EXPLORA II PDF Brochure. - Hollywoodland Supper Club Review: Worth $220?
Honest Hollywoodland Supper Club review from Legend of the Seas: every course, the dress code, the drinks, and how waiting can halve the $220 price. Hollywoodland Supper Club Review: Worth $220, or Wait for the 50% Onboard Deal? Is the Hollywoodland Supper Club on Legend of the Seas worth it? Yes, but the price you pay makes all the difference. The listed price was $220 per person plus 18% gratuity, and I saw no discounts in the Cruise Planner before sailing. If seats aren't sold out, though, it can drop by up to 50% onboard. I booked onboard at $110 plus gratuity, and at that price it was absolutely worth it. So here's the real question this post answers: do you lock in your seat at full price before you sail, or take the gamble and wait for the deal? I'll walk you through the whole evening, course by course, so you can decide for yourself. Hollywoodland Supper Club at a glance Ship: Legend of the Seas (Royal Caribbean's third Icon class ship, launched in Europe summer 2026) Location: Deck 8, near Central Park Price I saw: $220 per person + 18% gratuity ($259.60 total). Up to 50% off onboard if not sold out Seating: one seating per night, a maximum of around 50 place settings Courses: 6 on the menu, 8 if you count the canapé and palate cleanser Drinks: a paired cocktail with every course, plus water and Champagne top ups, all included Dress code: formal (men need a suit jacket; loaners are available) Theme: early 20th century Hollywood glamour, with live jazz all night In this article How much does the Hollywoodland Supper Club cost? Should you pre-book or wait for the onboard deal? What happens before dinner, and what's the dress code? What is the venue like? What's on the menu? Every course, in order Are drinks included? Can the Supper Club handle dietary requirements? How does Hollywoodland compare to the other supper clubs? So, is it worth it? FAQ How much does the Hollywoodland Supper Club cost? On my sailing, the Hollywoodland Supper Club was listed at $220 per person plus 18% gratuity, which works out at $259.60 each, or just over $519 for two. I checked the Cruise Planner before the cruise and didn't see any discounts at all. Worth knowing: earlier reports from Legend's first sailings put it at $200, so the price seems to vary by sailing. Check your own Cruise Planner rather than trusting any one number you read online, mine included. It's also not covered by the Unlimited Dining Package. The supper clubs sit outside it with Chef's Table and Royal Railway, so even package holders pay extra. Should you pre-book or wait for the onboard deal? This is the dilemma, and it's the bit nobody else seems to talk about. There's only one seating per night, and I counted a maximum of about 50 place settings. That's roughly 300 odd places across a whole week, on a ship carrying close to 7,000 passengers. Do the maths. If you definitely want to go, on a specific night, and you don't want to risk it selling out, book in advance and pay full price. But if the seatings don't sell out, you might get a deal onboard of up to 50% off. That brings it down to $110 plus 18% gratuity, so $129.80 per person. I took the chance and booked onboard, and it paid off. My honest advice: Celebrating something, or it's a must-do? Pre-book. $220 hurts, but missing it hurts more. Curious but flexible? Wait. Check the daily planner and ask at the venue or a specialty dining desk early in the cruise. Sailing in peak season or a short cruise? Fewer nights means fewer seats, so the gamble is riskier. I'm sure the discounts won't be offered on every sailing, especially once word gets around, so treat the 50% as a possibility, not a promise. What happens before dinner, and what's the dress code? The experience starts before you even get there. A wax-sealed envelope is delivered to your stateroom. Inside is a firm arrival time (remember, there's only one seating per night) and a reminder about the dress code. It says formal. That's not black tie, but men do need to wear a suit jacket. If you haven't packed one, don't panic. They have a few you can borrow. I'd still pack your own if you're planning to go, rather than hoping one fits on the night. What is the venue like? Now we're inside. The theme is early 20th century Hollywood glamour, and I think the details are immaculate. Classy, not cluttered. It's elegant, cosy and intimate. You can count the tables. There's a maximum of about 50 place settings, which makes it feel very exclusive compared with the size of the ship around it. Even the dinnerware is embossed, a lovely little touch. What is the music like? We're treated to live jazz all night. Our musician made a grand entrance with the theme from The Pink Panther, and every music choice was film based to stay on theme. The music is even selected to match the courses. The numbers are subtle. They're designed to enhance the food, not distract from it, which is exactly right for a dinner this long. What's on the menu? Every course, in order The menu is divided into scenes, with 6 courses, 8 if you count the canapé and palate cleanser. I think it's really well thought through, and the presentation is so appetising. You're given a printed guide, which was a helpful reference throughout the evening. The opener: pea blini with caviar A small amuse bouche eaten in one bite: pea blini with caviar and goat's cheese foam. Delicious. Then comes the bread. It's not one of the listed courses, but it arrives with butter and sea salt served on a beach pebble. These two openers are meant to evoke Hollywood's seaside location. Brown Derby Cobb salad Named after a famous Hollywood restaurant, this is an interesting take on a Cobb salad. It comes with avocado jelly, more caviar and edamame beans. Portions are small, as you'd expect in a multi-course dinner. And trust me, that's a good thing by the end. Walk of Fame lobster Served cold with a gazpacho soup, citrus and berries. It was a really nice dish, light and fresh before the heavier courses to come. Hollywood onion soup (the scene 1 finale) The finale of scene 1. The Gruyère cheese croquette and caramelised onion are served first, to keep the croquette crunchy, then the onion soup is poured into the bowl at the table. Elegantly. Well, it could have been more elegantly, as you'll see in the video. Interpret that as you will. Delicious. But here's the honest bit: it's a lot of food, and the main event is still to come. The palate cleanser: lemon sorbet In between scenes comes a lemon sorbet, served with dry ice. It's partly for the visual and partly to keep the sorbet chilled. You can't beat this presentation, and it was nice to have a palate cleanser before the main course. The main: wagyu beef fillet I chose the wagyu beef fillet. There were also chicken, fish and vegetarian options. It's cooked to order and comes with modest sides. My mouth is watering remembering it. It was a very delicate cut of steak, and for me it was the star of the show. Dessert, and a surprise There's a choice of two desserts, and they both sounded amazing. I went for a cake with the flavours of French toast and a caramelised hazelnut. The presentation was excellent. Then came a surprise, completely off menu. The waiters came out with treats for every table: chocolates on a specially made film reel serving tray. It's the details like this that have made the experience extra memorable. Bread course with butter and sea salt on a beach pebble. Brown Derby Cobb Salad Lemon Sorbet Wagyu Beef Fillet Surprise Chocolates Are drinks included? Yes. A paired cocktail comes with every course, along with water and any top ups of Champagne you ask for. It's all included in the price. Now, a warning. The cocktails were starting to pile up on my table. If you drink all of them plus the Champagne, it's a bit boozy. For me, just sipping with each course was enough. As for the cocktails themselves, there were sweet ones, bitter ones and some weird ones. It's unlikely all of them will be to your taste, but that's part of the fun. Note that these are cocktail pairings, not the wine pairings you get at Royal Caribbean's other multi-course dinner, the Chef's Table. Can the Supper Club handle dietary requirements? Yes. I wanted to show this in the video, so I saw an adapted version of the Cobb salad. If you're gluten free, vegetarian or lactose free, just ask when you book. Let them know in advance rather than on the night, so the kitchen can plan every course for you. So, is the Hollywoodland Supper Club worth it? At $110 plus gratuity, yes, without hesitation. You get eight courses, a paired cocktail with each one, Champagne, live jazz and a room that feels like nowhere else on the ship. For that price, it was worth it to me. At the full $220 plus gratuity, it's a special occasion splurge. The food is excellent, the wagyu was the highlight, and the attention to detail is genuinely impressive. But it's also a lot of food and a lot of drink, and not every cocktail will land for everyone. So my verdict: if you know you want it, pre-book. If you're on the fence, wait and look for the onboard deal. That's the one decision that changes the value of this whole evening. Let me know in the comments if you're into this exclusive dining format, or happy to give it a miss. Frequently asked questions How much is the Hollywoodland Supper Club on Legend of the Seas? On my sailing it was $220 per person plus 18% gratuity, so $259.60 each. Some earlier sailings reported $200, so check your Cruise Planner. Can you get a discount on the Hollywoodland Supper Club? I saw no discounts before the cruise, but onboard it can drop by up to 50% if seats aren't sold out. I paid $110 plus gratuity. What is the dress code for the Hollywoodland Supper Club? Formal. It's not black tie, but men need a suit jacket. A few loaner jackets are available if you forget. How many courses are there? Six courses on the menu, or eight if you count the canapé and the lemon sorbet palate cleanser. Plus a surprise chocolate treat at the end. Are drinks included in the Supper Club price? Yes. A paired cocktail with every course, water and Champagne top ups are all included. Is the Supper Club included in the Unlimited Dining Package? No. Royal Caribbean's supper clubs are excluded from the Unlimited Dining Package, so you pay extra even if you have one. How many people does the Hollywoodland Supper Club seat? A maximum of about 50 place settings, with just one seating per night. That's why it can sell out. Can the Hollywoodland Supper Club cater for dietary requirements? Yes. Gluten free, vegetarian and lactose free diets can be accommodated. Tell them when you book. Where is the Hollywoodland Supper Club on Legend of the Seas? It's on Deck 8, near the Central Park neighbourhood. Is Hollywoodland on any other Royal Caribbean ship? No, it's exclusive to Legend of the Seas. Icon has Empire Supper Club, Star has Lincoln Park Supper Club, and Hero of the Seas will get Orleans Parish Supper Club in 2027. - Celebrity Beyond Guide: Cabins, Dining & Deck Plans (2026)
Celebrity Beyond ship guide by The Walking Cruiser: key facts, cabins, restaurants, standout features and deck plans to help you plan your cruise. Celebrity Beyond Discover the Celebrity Beyond: Redefining Luxury Cruise Travel Launched in 2022 as the third vessel in Celebrity Cruises' highly acclaimed Edge-class, the Celebrity Beyond elevates the modern cruising experience. Designed to foster a deeper connection between guests and the ocean, this ship features an outward-facing design, expansive open-air spaces, and a meticulous attention to luxury detail. Whether you are looking for world-class dining, immersive entertainment, or unparalleled relaxation, the Celebrity Beyond delivers a resort-style vacation at sea. Technical Specifications Understanding the scale of the Celebrity Beyond helps showcase why it offers such a smooth and spacious ride. Here are the essential numbers behind the ship: 141,420 GT Gross Tonnage 2022 Year Built 3,260 maximum Passenger Capacity Celebrity Cruises Cruise Line 1400 Crew Size Miami (Florida) Home Port Standout Onboard Features The Celebrity Beyond takes the innovative concepts of its sister ships (the Edge and Apex) and expands upon them, offering longer, taller, and more refined spaces. The Magic Carpet Perhaps the most recognizable feature of the Edge-class, the Magic Carpet is a cantilevered, floating platform on the starboard side of the ship. Depending on the time of day, it moves between decks to serve as an open-air lounge, a specialty dining venue with panoramic sea views, or a streamlined embarkation station for shore excursions. The Grand Plaza Acting as the social heartbeat of the ship, the Grand Plaza spans three decks and was inspired by the piazzas of Italy. At its center sits the vibrant Martini Bar, sitting beneath a mesmerizing LED chandelier that choreographs light shows to music each evening. Eden Spanning three decks at the aft (rear) of the ship, Eden is a multi-sensory environment wrapped in massive floor-to-ceiling glass. It transforms throughout the day: a quiet, leafy retreat for morning coffee, a casual lunch spot in the afternoon, and an immersive, theatrical dining and cocktail venue by night. The Rooftop Garden Designed as a chic, urban park, the Rooftop Garden features lush greenery, cozy seating nooks, and two stunning infinity-edge float pools that extend over the side of the ship. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite at the Rooftop Garden Grill, watch a movie under the stars, or enjoy live acoustic music. The Retreat For those seeking the ultimate luxury cruise experience, The Retreat is an exclusive, resort-within-a-resort complex available only to suite guests. It features a private two-story sundeck, a dedicated lounge with concierge service, and Luminae, a private fine-dining restaurant featuring signature dishes created by Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud. Culinary Excellence: Dining & Bars Dining on the Celebrity Beyond is a global adventure, featuring 32 distinct food and beverage venues. Main Dining Reimagined: Instead of one massive dining room, guests rotate through four complimentary main restaurants (Normandie, Tuscan, Cosmopolitan, and Cyprus), each offering a core menu alongside exclusive, regionally inspired dishes. Specialty Dining: Elevate your evening at Fine Cut Steakhouse, enjoy the seafood-focused Raw on 5, or experience Le Voyage, the first signature restaurant at sea by Chef Daniel Boulud. For a touch of whimsy, Le Petit Chef uses 3D table animation to bring your meal to life before you eat. Bars and Lounges: Grab an artisanal beer at the Craft Social Bar, enjoy premium wines at the World Class Bar, or take in the wake of the ship at the multi-level Sunset Bar, redesigned by Nate Berkus to feature a stylish, Moroccan-inspired aesthetic. Elegant Accommodations & Suites The staterooms on the Celebrity Beyond are designed to maximize space and natural light. Infinite Verandas: These innovative cabins erase the boundary between indoor and outdoor living. With the push of a button, the entire living space becomes a balcony as the top of the floor-to-ceiling window lowers down. AquaClass Staterooms: Perfect for wellness enthusiasts, these cabins include exclusive access to the clean-cuisine restaurant, Blu, complimentary access to the SEA Thermal Suite, a yoga mat, and in-room fitness amenities. Iconic Suites: The pinnacle of onboard luxury, these massive suites are positioned high above the bridge, offering panoramic views better than the Captain's, a private terrace with a hot tub, and dedicated butler service. Wellness & Entertainment The SEA Thermal Suite is the crown jewel of the spa, featuring eight therapeutic experiences including a hammam, a crystalarium, and heated tile loungers. For fitness, the ship boasts a state-of-the-art gym complete with F45 training classes and a fleet of Peloton bikes. When the sun goes down, The Theatre features a massive 20-foot 4K LED screen that wraps around the stage, setting the backdrop for technologically advanced, acrobatic stage productions. For late-night dancing, The Club hosts DJ sets, live music, and interactive shows. Here are the best insider tips to help you navigate the ship like a pro: Dining & Drink Hacks Skip the Buffet Crowds at Eden Café: While the masses head to the Oceanview Café (the main buffet) for breakfast and lunch, head all the way aft to the Eden Café instead. It offers a fantastic, quieter menu featuring fresh paninis, salads, and pastries. The real secret: It has a hidden outdoor seating area right at the back of the ship that is perfect for a peaceful morning coffee. Order "Off-Menu" at the Mast Grill: The pool deck’s Mast Grill is incredibly convenient, but during peak lunch hours, the burgers often sit in a steam tray to keep the line moving. Politely ask the grill master for a burger cooked fresh to order. They are completely happy to do it, and the quality difference is massive. (You can also request custom-made pizzas with whatever toppings you want!) Mind the Magic Carpet Curfew: The cantilevered Magic Carpet is arguably the best spot on the ship for sunset cocktails, but don't plan on it being your late-night hangout. It usually closes around 9:30 PM. The crew needs to move the massive platform to its required deck for the following day, and they do it early to avoid waking up the guests in the cabins nearby. Entertainment & Venues Score Premium Theater Seats: The upper-level balcony seats in The Theatre offer fantastic, unobstructed views, but they are initially roped off exclusively for Suite and Retreat guests. However, any unclaimed seats in this prime section are opened up to all passengers roughly 5 to 10 minutes before the show begins. Grab a drink, wait nearby, and swoop in. Find the "Odyssey" Art Installation: The Beyond is practically a floating art gallery, but there is one hidden exhibit you have to seek out. Look for the mixed-media installation called Odyssey (created by artist Fredrikson Stallard). It's a gorgeous, tranquil mirrored walkway filled with bronze orbs and twinkling lights. It’s an incredible photo op that many cruisers completely miss. Catch the Martini Bar Flair Shows: The bartenders at the central Martini Bar in the Grand Plaza don't just pour drinks. A couple of times a night, they put on a high-energy flair show—juggling shakers, flipping bottles, and pouring towering stacks of martinis in perfectly synchronized routines. Listen for the loud, upbeat music and the cheering crowd to know when it's starting. Relaxation & Spaces Claim Your Sunset Bar Seat Early: Designed by Nate Berkus, the Moroccan-inspired Sunset Bar spans multiple levels at the very back of the ship and offers the best wake views at sea. Unsurprisingly, it is packed at golden hour. If you want one of the prime aft-facing lounge beds or rail-side tables, arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset. Escape to the Solarium: If the main pool deck is feeling a bit too loud or crowded (especially on sea days during the "Poolest Day Ever" deck parties), slip into the Solarium. It’s a stunning, glass-enclosed pool area that is strictly 16+. The plush loungers here are the best place on the ship to read a book in peace. Here are a few secrets and ship hacks that first-time cruisers often miss: 1. You Don't Need Paid Wi-Fi to Use the Ship’s App Marella has a free onboard intranet system called Navigate. As soon as you board, put your phone in airplane mode, connect to the ship's internal Wi-Fi network, and open the app in your browser. You can use it to book specialty dining, check the daily entertainment schedule, book shore excursions, and track your onboard account—all without paying a dime for an internet package. 2. Book "Surf & Turf" on Day One If you want to eat at the premium Surf & Turf Steakhouse (and you should—the steaks are phenomenal), do not wait to book. It is the most popular specialty restaurant on the ship and reservations disappear quickly. Use the Navigate app to lock in your table the moment you board. 3. Look for "Port Day" Spa Discounts Want to experience the massive Champneys Spa without paying premium prices? Wait for a port day. The spa often runs heavy discounts and bundle packages on days when most passengers are off exploring. If you’ve already visited a specific port on a previous trip, stay on board and enjoy a discounted massage while the ship is quiet. 4. Press for Bubbles at Flutes If you love Champagne, head to Flutes on Deck 7. It’s a beautifully designed, sleek bar that often features a live pianist. Look out for the booths equipped with a quirky "Press for Bubbles" button. It’s a brilliant photo op and a fun way to order your next glass of fizz. 5. Upgrade to the Premium Drinks Package for Convenience Marella is strictly all-inclusive, meaning standard cocktails, beer, and wine are already covered. However, upgrading to the Premium All-Inclusive Package gets you upgraded spirits and premium cocktails, but the real insider perk is the grab-and-go convenience. The premium package includes upgraded coffees at The Coffee Port, 1.5-liter bottles of water (perfect to grab before heading off the ship for a shore excursion), and canned sodas instead of fountain drinks. Eastern Caribbean Itineraries: These sailings typically visit ports like Philipsburg (St. Maarten), Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas), and San Juan (Puerto Rico). Western Caribbean Itineraries: These routes take you to adventurous destinations like Roatán (Honduras), Costa Maya (Mexico), and Cozumel (Mexico). Perfect Day at CocoCay: Every Icon sailing includes a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island in the Bahamas. Here, you can relax in the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean or take on the towering 135-foot Daredevil’s Peak waterslide. 5 Insider Tips and Hidden Gems With a ship this massive, there are plenty of secrets that most cruisers don't discover until their vacation is almost over. Here are our top tips for hacking your Icon of the Seas experience: Skip the Buffet Crowds: The Windjammer buffet is incredible, but it can get busy during peak breakfast and lunch hours. For a quieter, high-quality meal, head to the AquaDome Market (Royal Caribbean's first food hall) or grab a delicious, complimentary breakfast sandwich at the Pearl Café on Deck 6. Starbucks on the Drink Package: If you purchased the Deluxe Beverage Package, you can get premium espresso, cold brew, and Frappuccinos for free at the Pearl Café. However, if you order the exact same drink at the branded Starbucks kiosk on Deck 5, you will be charged extra! Find the Hidden Slushie Machines: The main pool deck bars are always popular, but if you head to the center Lime & Coconut bar on Deck 16, you will find exclusive cocktail slushie machines that the other bars don't have. (Try the Miami Vice!) Reserve Shows Immediately: The entertainment on the Icon is free, but the spectacular shows in the AquaDome and the Absolute Zero ice arena "sell out" of reservations very quickly. Download the Royal Caribbean app and book your showtimes the absolute second you board the ship. Escape to The Overlook: If you need a quiet place to read a book or just stare at the ocean, head to the very front of the ship in the AquaDome. Tucked away behind the theater are "The Overlook Pods"—gorgeous, comfortable seating areas with massive floor-to-ceiling windows that most guests completely miss. What is Included in Your Icon of the Seas Fare? When booking a premium ship like the Icon, it is important to know what you get for your money. While there are plenty of ways to upgrade your experience, a massive amount of the ship's best features are completely free: Incredible Dining : Access to the Main Dining Room, Windjammer Buffet, Sorrento’s Pizza, El Loco Fresh, Surfside Bites, the AquaDome Market, and Basecamp. All The Thrills: Unlimited access to the Category 6 Waterpark, the FlowRider surf simulator, the rock climbing wall, mini-golf, and the Surfside carousel. World-Class Entertainment: Every Broadway-style production, high-diving AquaTheater show, and ice skating spectacular is included in your fare. Kids Programming: Adventure Ocean, the award-winning kids' club, provides supervised childcare and activities for ages 3 to 12. Icon of the Seas Deck Plans Preview Icon of the Seas PDF Brochure. These innovative staterooms include a beautiful winter garden annex leading out to a private balcony, giving you a private oasis to enjoy a sunrise breakfast or an evening cocktail. The Ultimate Guide to Costa Smeralda Cabins and Suites When booking a cruise on the beautiful Costa Smeralda, choosing the right stateroom is crucial to your experience. Designed by the Milan-based firm Dordoni Architetti, all 2,612 cabins on this massive Excellence-class ship feature bespoke Italian furnishings, smart TVs, and decor that matches the distinct Italian city theme of each deck. Whether you are looking for a budget-friendly inside stateroom, an innovative Terrace Suite, or the sheer luxury of a Grand Suite, this guide breaks down every cabin category on the Costa Smeralda to help you choose the best room for your vacation. Understanding the "Classic" vs. "Premium" Cabin Tiers Before diving into the room types, it is important to understand Costa’s pricing tiers, which apply to Inside, Ocean View, and standard Balcony cabins: Classic Cabins: These are typically located on the lower decks or at the extreme forward and aft of the ship. They offer standard amenities, including 24-hour room service (for an extra fee) and a thermostat-controlled environment. Premium Cabins: Located in the most desirable mid-ship areas and higher decks. Guests booking Premium cabins enjoy extra perks, such as free continental breakfast delivered to the room (upon request), complimentary 24-hour room service, and a 10% discount on a future Costa cruise. Insider Secrets for Sailing the Costa Smeralda The Costa Smeralda is a massive, bustling ship with a distinct European flair. To help you navigate this mega-ship like a seasoned pro, here are some insider hacks and tips you won't find in the official brochure. 1. The "Free Water" Hack Unlike many American cruise lines where water and basic coffee are available 24/7, the Costa Smeralda turns off the buffet beverage machines outside of designated meal times. If you want a drink between meals and do not have a beverage package, you will be directed to a bar to purchase water by the glass. Insider Tip: Pack a high-quality reusable thermos or water bottle. Fill it up at the buffet stations during breakfast or lunch so you have free, cold hydration in your cabin or by the pool all afternoon. 2. Skip the Buffet; Use the MDR for Breakfast The Costa Smeralda holds over 6,000 passengers, but its primary buffet on Deck 8 is surprisingly small for the ship's capacity. During peak breakfast and lunch hours, finding a table can be a challenge. Insider Tip: Head to one of the Main Dining Rooms (MDRs) like Il Rugantino or La Colombina. They are open for breakfast and lunch, offering a much calmer, sit-down atmosphere. Furthermore, use the Costa App on your phone—it features a live crowd tracker that tells you exactly how busy each dining venue is at any given moment. 3. Embrace the "Late Night" Italian Schedule Because Costa caters heavily to a European, and specifically Italian, demographic, the ship operates on Mediterranean time. If you are used to finishing dinner by 7:00 PM and watching a show at 8:30 PM, you will need to adjust your internal clock. Insider Tip : The real energy on the Costa Smeralda doesn't peak until late. The main deck parties and nightclub events often don't truly kick off until 11:00 PM or 11:30 PM. Do as the locals do: enjoy a leisurely, late dinner, and take a mid-afternoon nap so you have the energy to enjoy the spectacular nightlife. 4. Beware the "Glass Wall" Bathroom If you are booking a budget-friendly Inside Cabin, be aware of a unique design quirk: the bathroom is separated from the main living space by a glass wall covered by a curtain, rather than a solid wall and door. Insider Tip: These cabins lack a dedicated nightlight. If you get up to use the restroom in the middle of the night and turn the main bathroom switch on, the light will bleed around the curtain and illuminate the entire cabin. Pack a small, battery-operated magnetic nightlight to stick to the bathroom wall so you don't wake up your cabin mates. 5. Have a Backup Plan for Shore Excursions While the ship is highly international, the primary language onboard is Italian. When booking official Costa shore excursions, the tours are divided by language. Insider Tip: If there are not enough English-speaking passengers signed up for a specific English-guided tour, the ship may cancel that specific language group at the last minute. Because the Smeralda visits highly walkable ports like Barcelona, Marseille, and Naples, have a DIY backup plan ready, or consider booking third-party excursions in advance to guarantee an English-speaking guide. 6. The Solo Traveler Advantage If you are cruising alone, the Costa Smeralda is one of the best-kept secrets in the industry. While many major cruise lines penalize solo travelers with a 100% "solo supplement" (forcing you to pay double), Costa is famous for heavily reducing or even waiving these fees on select sailings. Insider Tip: Keep an eye out for off-season Mediterranean itineraries. You can often secure a standard cabin on the Smeralda for just a fraction more than the per-person double occupancy rate. - Ultimate Cherbourg Cruise Port Guide: What to Do & See
Planning a stop in Cherbourg? Read our complete cruise port guide for tips on getting to town, exploring Cité de la Mer, and booking Normandy shore excursions. Cherbourg Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Dock Complete Key West Cruise Port Guide: Terminals, Transportation & Must-See Attractions If your itinerary has a stop in Normandy, chances are it's Cherbourg. I've walked off the gangway here more times than I can count, and it's one of my favorite "easy" port days in Europe — flat, walkable, and packed with more history than a single day can really hold. Here's everything I've picked up, from where your ship actually docks to how to squeeze in Bayeux without missing the "all aboard." Where Does Your Cruise Ship Dock in Cherbourg? Ships dock directly at the pier in Cherbourg — no tendering, which is always a relief on a tight port day. You'll come in at one of two spots: Quai de France or Quai de Normandie, both part of the historic Gare Maritime Transatlantique, the old transatlantic terminal building. If that name rings a bell, it's because this was once a major departure point for transatlantic liners, including a stop for the Titanic before it crossed the Atlantic. Is Cherbourg Port Walkable? Yes — genuinely one of the easiest ports in Normandy to do completely on your own. The terrain is flat, the walk is scenic, and you don't need a shuttle unless you want one. I'd rate it a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 for walkability, mostly because the path hugs the marina the whole way and there's zero elevation to worry about. Walk From Cherbourg Cruise Terminal to Town The cruise terminal to city center walking distance is right around 1.4 km — about a 15 to 20 minute stroll along the waterfront promenade, past the Bassin du Commerce and into the main shopping and restaurant streets. It's a genuinely pleasant walk, not a slog through an industrial port zone, which isn't always the case in cruise ports. If you'd rather not walk, cruise lines typically run a shuttle bus straight to the town center, and taxis wait right at the terminal too. What to Do Without Leaving the Terminal Building Here's the best part of Cherbourg: you don't even have to walk anywhere to hit one of the port's top attractions. The historic Art Deco terminal building itself houses La Cité de la Mer, a maritime museum built right into the old transatlantic terminal. Inside, you'll find: A Titanic-focused exhibit, tying back to Cherbourg's role as one of the ship's ports of call Le Redoutable, a decommissioned French nuclear submarine — the largest submarine open to the public anywhere in the world A large aquarium, one of the deepest in Europe If you've only got a couple of hours ashore, this alone is worth it. Cherbourg Cruise Port to Bayeux Train If you want to see the famous Bayeux Tapestry, Bayeux is the move — and it's very doable by train. The shuttle from the terminal drops you at Cherbourg's railway station in about 7 to 10 minutes, and from there it's roughly an hour to Bayeux, with direct trains running fairly regularly (check SNCF Connect ahead of time for the day's schedule, since it shifts seasonally). Once there, the old town itself is worth wandering — timber-framed houses, cobbled streets, and the tapestry housed a short walk from the station. D-Day Beaches From Cherbourg Cherbourg's location makes it a genuinely strategic base for Normandy's WWII history. Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches, along with the Normandy American Cemetery, are scattered along the coast roughly 30 to 90 minutes from the port depending on which sites you're targeting. Because they're spread out, I'd lean toward a ship-organized excursion or a private tour if you want to cover more than one site — trying to string them together independently on public transport in a single port day is tight. Mont Saint-Michel From Cherbourg — Is It Worth the Drive? Mont Saint-Michel is stunning, no argument there — but it's about a 2-hour drive each way, which makes it a full-day commitment. If your ship gives you a long port day and you've already done Cherbourg or Bayeux on a previous visit, it's worth it. If this is your only Normandy stop and you want a taste of the region rather than a single landmark, I'd pick Bayeux or the D-Day beaches instead. Practical Tips for a Cherbourg Port Day Currency: Euro. Cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for small bakeries and the tourist train. Language: French, but English is well understood around the terminal, museum, and main tourist areas. Getting around town: A small tourist train usually waits right outside the terminal when ships are in — a relaxed way to get an overview if you're not up for the walk. Timing: With no tendering involved, you'll typically get ashore quickly, which buys you extra time for a longer excursion like Bayeux. Final Thoughts Cherbourg is one of those ports that rewards doing your homework beforehand — it's easy enough to explore solo, but the real payoff (Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, Mont Saint-Michel) requires a bit of planning around train times or excursions. Whether you're staying local for a relaxed walk along the marina or heading out to Normandy's WWII history, it's a port day that's hard to get wrong. Have you been to Cherbourg?
