Launched in 2008 and christened by Dame Helen Mirren, the P&O Ventura remains one of the most beloved and recognizable ships in the British cruising fleet. Designed with a perfect balance of family-friendly energy and grown-up sophistication, this Grand-class vessel stretches nearly 290 meters and carries a unique character, complete with an impressive collection of over 7,000 pieces of British artwork.

P&O Ventura: Insider Tips & Hidden Secrets

Want to experience the P&O Ventura like a seasoned cruiser? Here are the best-kept secrets, navigational hacks, and dining tips to help you make the most of your voyage.

1. Find the "Secret" Clamshell Viewing Spot

If you love ship spotting or simply want the ultimate uncrowded view during sailaways, you need to find the Clamshell. It’s a hidden, open-air viewing spot right at the very bow of the ship.

  • How to get there: Walk all the way forward on the Deck 7 Promenade, head up the external stairs to Deck 8, and keep walking forward. You'll be rewarded with incredible, panoramic sea views that most passengers never find.

2. The Deck 6 Galley Block

One of the most common mistakes first-time Ventura cruisers make is trying to walk the full length of the ship on Deck 6. You can't! The ship’s back-to-back galleys (kitchens) block the middle of this deck.

  • The Hack: If you need to get from the front to the back of the ship, always use Deck 7 (the Promenade) or Decks 8 through 14. Once you reach the aft stairs or elevators on a higher deck, you can then safely drop down to the Deck 6 dining rooms without hitting a dead end.

3. The "Full Circuit" Promenade Walk

If you want to get your steps in without going to the gym, Ventura offers a fantastic walking route. It is possible to walk the complete length of the ship outdoors. You can ascend the external stairs at the front, walk around the bow, descend the stairs on the other side, and complete an entire loop of the ship without ever going indoors.

4. Skip the Morning Buffet Crowds

The Waterside Buffet can get incredibly busy during the breakfast rush. For a much more relaxed start to the day, head down to the Main Dining Room (MDR). You’ll get table service, a peaceful atmosphere, and high-quality cooked-to-order breakfasts—at no extra cost.

5. Sneak into the Theatre on Deck 6

The two-deck Arena Theatre can fill up quickly for the popular West-End style shows. Most passengers pile in through the main Deck 7 entrances.

  • The Hack: Enter the theatre on Deck 6 instead. It is generally much quieter, making it easier to slip in unobtrusively and grab a pair of seats if you are running a few minutes late.

6. The Best Value Specialty Dining

If you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank, book a table at The Beach House. This pop-up evening restaurant takes over a section of the buffet at night and offers fantastic, hearty American-style dishes (like steaks, ribs, and sizzler plates) for a very modest cover charge (usually under £10). It is arguably the best value-for-money dining experience on the ship, but it books up fast, so reserve your spot early!

7. You Don't Need Travel Adapters (Mostly)

Unlike many American cruise lines, Ventura caters heavily to the British market. Your cabin will be equipped with standard UK three-pin plug sockets, usually located by the vanity table and TV. You'll also find a kettle with complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities in every room—a true British cruise essential!

8. Beat the Slow Wi-Fi

Cruise ship Wi-Fi is notoriously sluggish because it relies on satellite connections. If you need to upload photos, download a book, or check your emails, do it first thing in the morning when the ship pulls into port. Everyone else will either be asleep or getting ready for excursions, meaning you won't be fighting thousands of other passengers for bandwidth.
