Bad weather and king tides in the Bahamas push Royal Caribbean's short-cruise giant 650 miles west, with Nassau and Perfect Day CocoCay both off the itinerary

So, if you're boarding Utopia of the Seas in Port Canaveral today, you're not going to the Bahamas. Royal Caribbean has swapped Nassau and Perfect Day CocoCay for a single call in Cozumel, Mexico, on the 4-night sailing departing Monday 26 October 2026. Guests found out by email on Sunday, the day before embarkation, and a rough weather system in the Bahamas is the reason.

Key Facts Ship: Utopia of the Seas (Royal Caribbean, Oasis class, more than 5,600 guests) Sailing: 4 nights, Port Canaveral round trip, Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026 What's gone: Nassau (Tuesday 27 October) and Perfect Day CocoCay (Thursday 29 October) What's new: Cozumel, Mexico, Wednesday 28 October, 10am to 3pm, plus three sea days in total Why: near-gale to gale-force winds, rough seas and king tides forecast for the Bahamas Excursions: Royal Caribbean tours booked for Nassau or CocoCay are cancelled and refunded to your SeaPass account

That's a big swing. Cozumel sits more than 650 miles west of Nassau and CocoCay, so the ship is heading to an entirely different part of the Caribbean to get away from the weather.

The news was first reported by Cruise Hive, based on Royal Caribbean's email to booked guests, which was shared on Reddit. In that email, the line put the change down to a weather system "expected to bring unfavorable conditions to the Bahamas." Royal Caribbean hasn't issued a wider public statement, so the guest email is the best detail we have right now.

Why is Royal Caribbean avoiding the Bahamas this week?

Well, it's not one storm with a name. It's a combination of things all landing at once.

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology is forecasting near-gale to gale-force winds from Sunday 25 October through Tuesday 27 October, with marine hazards likely to linger into Wednesday. Seas of 9 to 14 feet are expected, higher in exposed Atlantic waters, and there's a risk of heavy rain and flash flooding.

On top of that, this week brings the king tides, the highest tides of the season. Push those on top of strong onshore winds and you get higher water levels and a real chance of coastal flooding.

Now think about what that means for a cruise ship. Nassau is a busy, fairly tight harbour. CocoCay relies on a pier and a lot of outdoor, water-based attractions that simply don't work in gale-force gusts. You can see why Royal Caribbean didn't fancy gambling on either.

And Utopia isn't the only ship affected. Harmony of the Seas, which sailed from Port Canaveral on Saturday, kept both Bahamas ports but swapped their order. She went to Nassau on Sunday and pushed CocoCay to Tuesday to dodge the worst of the forecast. Utopia's sailing falls right in the middle of the rough patch, so a simple reshuffle wasn't an option for her.

Losing CocoCay hurts more on a 4-night cruise

Here's the honest bit. On a 7-night cruise, losing a port is annoying. On a 4-night cruise, it changes the whole holiday.

Utopia was built for short Bahamas cruises. Nassau and CocoCay are the backbone of almost every sailing she does, and for a lot of guests Perfect Day CocoCay is the whole point of booking. I've done a 4-night sailing on Utopia myself, and these short trips are built around those two port days.

This week's guests now get one port instead of two, and only five hours in it. They also get three sea days out of four full days. If you booked a CocoCay cabana, Thrill Waterpark passes or a beach club day, that's gone.

But it's not all bad news. Utopia is one of the biggest ships in the world, and she's genuinely good at sea days. There's a lot to do onboard. And Cozumel is a proper destination, not a consolation stop. It's one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean, with good snorkelling and beach clubs close to the piers.

This isn't Utopia's first visit, either. She made her first ever call at Cozumel in May 2025 on a one-off Mexico sailing, so the island has seen her before.

What does this mean for you if you're on board?

If you're sailing on Utopia this week, here's what to do.

Check your SeaPass account for refunds. Any shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean for Nassau or CocoCay are being cancelled automatically, with the money going back to your onboard account. If you booked anything privately, such as a Nassau tour or a CocoCay beach day with an outside company, you'll need to contact that company yourself.

Don't assume there's compensation. The guest email shared online doesn't mention onboard credit or any other compensation for the change. Royal Caribbean's cruise contract allows itinerary changes for weather and safety. If you're unsure, ask Guest Services onboard whether any port taxes or fees for the missed calls will be refunded, as lines generally don't charge government taxes for ports they never visit. (Internal link: [your missed-port refund post])

Book Cozumel fast. A 10am to 3pm call is short. Shore excursions for Cozumel will go on sale in the app, and with thousands of guests all suddenly planning the same day, the best ones will sell out. If you'd rather do it yourself, keep it simple and stay close to the pier.

Check your documents. You're now visiting Mexico rather than the Bahamas. Make sure whatever ID you're travelling on works for Mexico too. UK guests will be on a passport anyway, so you're covered, but it's worth a quick look if you're travelling with anyone using other ID.

Plan your sea days early. Three sea days on a ship this busy means the pools, the shows and the specialty restaurants will be packed. Book shows and dining in the app as soon as you board.

Is this becoming a pattern this autumn?

Honestly, yes. This is the latest in a run of last-minute weather swaps for Royal Caribbean.

In the past fortnight, Oasis of the Seas swapped the Bahamas for Halifax in Canada. Vision of the Seas and Independence of the Seas both swapped Bermuda for Saint John, New Brunswick. And now Harmony and Utopia have both had to change around the Bahamas. (Internal link: [your Oasis of the Seas Halifax post])

Autumn is the tail end of hurricane season, and it's also when strong cold fronts start pushing down the US East Coast. Ships leaving Florida and New Jersey are getting caught by both.

None of this means you should avoid cruising in late October. But it does mean you should book with flexibility in mind. Have decent travel insurance, keep your expectations loose about which ports you'll actually see, and keep an eye on your email in the 48 hours before you sail. Most of these changes have come through the day before embarkation.

FAQ

Why is Utopia of the Seas going to Cozumel instead of the Bahamas?

Royal Caribbean changed the 26 October 2026 sailing because of a weather system bringing near-gale to gale-force winds, rough seas and king tides to the Bahamas. Nassau and Perfect Day CocoCay were both dropped, and the ship is calling at Cozumel, Mexico, instead, which is more than 650 miles west.

What time is Utopia of the Seas in Cozumel?

Utopia is due in Cozumel on Wednesday 28 October 2026 from 10am to 3pm. That's only five hours, so book excursions early and allow plenty of time to get back to the ship.

Will I get a refund if Royal Caribbean cancels Perfect Day CocoCay?

Shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean for CocoCay or Nassau are cancelled and refunded to your SeaPass account automatically. The guest email for this sailing doesn't mention onboard credit or other compensation, and the cruise contract allows weather-related itinerary changes. Ask Guest Services about any refundable port taxes for the missed calls.

Do I need a passport for a cruise to Cozumel from Florida?

UK travellers will be sailing on a passport, which covers Mexico. Rules for US citizens on round-trip cruises from the US are different, so check Royal Caribbean's documentation guidance or ask the line if you're not travelling on a passport.

Are other Royal Caribbean ships changing their Bahamas plans this week?

Yes. Harmony of the Seas, sailing from Port Canaveral on 24 October, swapped the order of her ports. She visited Nassau on Sunday 25 October and moved Perfect Day CocoCay to Tuesday 27 October. If you're booked on any Bahamas cruise this week, watch for emails from your cruise line.

The bottom line

So, nobody boarding Utopia today booked a Mexico cruise, and losing CocoCay on a 4-night trip is a genuine disappointment. But the call makes sense. Gale-force winds and king tides at a pier-based private island isn't a combination any captain wants. And a sea-day-heavy cruise on Utopia, with a few hours in Cozumel, is still a decent few days at sea.
