Hero of the Seas Arrives Early: Royal Caribbean Adds 2 New Sailings Before the Maiden Voyage
Two extra August 2027 departures go on sale on 7 October, and guests already booked get first pick until 14 October.
By The Walking Cruiser | 6 October 2026
Royal Caribbean has pulled Hero of the Seas' first passenger sailing forward by 10 days, adding two new departures from Miami ahead of the original 11 August 2027 maiden voyage. So if you've been waiting for a chance to be among the very first on board the fourth Icon Class ship, this is it, and the booking window opens this week. Guests already booked on the inaugural get first refusal, with change fees waived until 14 October.

What has Royal Caribbean actually changed?
Until now, Hero of the Seas' first sailing with paying guests was a 3-night trip leaving PortMiami on 11 August 2027, calling at Perfect Day CocoCay and back on the 14th. That sailing still goes ahead. What's changed is that Royal has slotted two new departures in front of it.
The first leaves on 1 August 2027. It's a full week, 7 nights, pairing Perfect Day CocoCay with the Western Caribbean. The second is a short 3-night Perfect Day CocoCay Getaway on 8 August, which brings the ship back to Miami in time to turn around for the original inaugural three days later.
Royal told guests already booked on the 11 August sailing by email first. Royal Caribbean Blog published the details of that email, in which the line said it was opening the door to Hero "sooner than expected." Cruise Hive also reported the change on 5 October, confirming the dates and the switching rules below.
Now, the length of that first sailing is worth noting on its own. The original maiden voyage was only 3 nights, so 1 August gives early birds a proper week on board rather than a long weekend.
When can you book the new Hero of the Seas sailings?
Cabins go on sale on the afternoon of Wednesday 7 October 2026. Royal hasn't given an exact time or time zone, so if you're booking from the UK, keep checking into the evening rather than giving up at lunchtime.
If you're already booked on 11 August, here's how the switch works:
Change fees are waived until 14 October if you move to one of the earlier sailings.
You pay the prevailing fare. Your original price doesn't travel with you. You'll be repriced at whatever the new sailing costs on the day you switch, which could be more or less than you paid.
All suites are held until 14 October. That gives existing guests first go at them before they're released to everyone else.
Doing nothing is fine. If you want to stay on 11 August, you don't need to contact anyone.
To switch, Royal is pointing guests to its phone lines: 1-888-281-9344 in the US and +31 367 117 936 in Europe, with webchat available for UK guests. If you booked through a travel agent, go through them instead.
And if you're not booked yet? Then 7 October is your date too. But be aware that suites are ring-fenced for existing guests for the first week, so the full suite inventory won't open to new bookings until after 14 October.
Is 1 August now the "inaugural" sailing?
This is the bit to think about before you jump. In its email, Royal still refers to 11 August as the Inaugural Sailing. It hasn't said what the two new departures will officially be called.
There's history here. When Royal added early departures to Star of the Seas, they were billed as showcase cruises, and a later date kept the official inaugural title. Cruise Hive notes that with both Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas, the originally announced maiden voyages still sailed as planned after the extra dates were added.
So what does that mean for you? It comes down to what you're actually after:
If you want to be physically first on the ship, 1 August is the one to book.
If you want the official inaugural, with whatever ceremony or keepsakes Royal attaches to it, 11 August may still hold that title. Royal hasn't confirmed either way, so ask before you move.
If you want a taster, the 8 August 3-night sailing is the shortest way in, and it still beats the old maiden voyage by three days.
One honest caveat. Early sailings on any brand-new ship can run before every venue and system is fully bedded in. That's part of the deal with being first. On a 7-night sailing, you'll simply have more days to notice it, good or bad.
Why is Hero of the Seas arriving early?
Royal didn't give a reason. But everything points to construction running on schedule or better at Meyer Turku in Finland. The keel was laid in September 2025, and Hero floated out for the first time on 4 September 2026. Work has now moved to the interiors, cabins and attractions ahead of sea trials and delivery.
This is also the third Icon Class ship in a row to gain sailings before its planned debut, after Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas. At this point it's a pattern rather than a surprise. My read is that it's as much about demand as the shipyard: the first sailings on a new Icon Class ship are some of the hardest cabins to get in the whole fleet, and adding dates lets Royal sell more of them.
What makes Hero of the Seas different from Icon, Star and Legend?
Hero follows the same Icon Class blueprint, but Royal has given her a few things the other three don't have:
Ultimate Family Treehouse: a three-deck suite with a rooftop terrace and whirlpool, aimed squarely at big family groups
Orleans Parish Supper Club: the New Orleans take on the supper club concept, with live jazz and Cajun and Creole food
The SpongeBob Musical: the Tony-nominated Broadway show headlines the theatre
Category 6 upgrades: two new family raft slides, including what Royal says is the first funnel raft slide at sea
The Hideaway: the adults-only area now has two pools and what Royal bills as the largest swim-up bar at sea
Nine pools in total
Once she's in service, Hero sails 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with Perfect Day CocoCay on every sailing. She also takes over from Icon of the Seas as Royal's flagship in Miami, with Icon moving to Galveston.
If you're weighing her up against the existing Icon Class ships, my Legend of the Seas vs Icon of the Seas comparison covers how much really changes from one sister to the next. And for where Hero fits in the wider fleet, here are the newest Royal Caribbean ships, newest to oldest.
FAQ
When does Hero of the Seas start sailing?
Hero of the Seas now starts sailing with passengers on 1 August 2027, with a 7-night Perfect Day CocoCay & Western Caribbean cruise from Miami. That's 10 days earlier than the original maiden voyage on 11 August 2027, which still goes ahead as planned.
When can I book the new Hero of the Seas sailings?
Cabins on the 1 August and 8 August 2027 sailings open on the afternoon of Wednesday 7 October 2026. Suites are held for guests already booked on the 11 August sailing until 14 October 2026, before being released for new bookings.
Can I switch from the 11 August inaugural without paying a change fee?
Yes. Royal Caribbean is waiving change fees until 14 October 2026 for guests moving from the 11 August sailing to an earlier one. You'll pay the prevailing fare for the new sailing, not your original price, and it's subject to availability.
Is the 1 August sailing the official Hero of the Seas inaugural?
Royal Caribbean hasn't said. Its email to booked guests still calls 11 August the Inaugural Sailing. When Star of the Seas gained early departures, they were labelled showcase cruises and a later date kept the inaugural title, so check with Royal before switching if that matters to you.
Where does Hero of the Seas sail from?
Hero of the Seas is based at PortMiami. After the opening sailings, she runs 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, and every sailing calls at Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day CocoCay.
The verdict
So, short version: Hero of the Seas is now arriving on 1 August 2027, and the race to be first on board starts this Wednesday. If you're already booked on 11 August and being first is the whole point, move before 14 October while the change fees are waived. If the official inaugural title matters more to you, sit tight until Royal says what the new sailings will be called.
I've reviewed Legend of the Seas on the channel, and if Hero carries on where her sisters left off, these first sailings will go fast. Would you switch to 1 August, or stay put for the inaugural?
