Did You Know?

1. The High-Tech Gyroscopic Pool Tables
One of the ultimate cool factors on this ship is found tucked away on Deck 6 in the Bombay Billiard Club (part of the Colony Club lounge area).

Playing pool on an ocean liner sounds impossible, but Royal Caribbean solved this by installing ultra-high-tech, self-leveling billiard tables. The tables use active gyroscopic sensors—similar to the technology used in stabilization systems and aviation—to continuously shift and counteract the pitch and roll of the sea. Even if the ship encounters rough waves, the table base moves while the playing surface stays completely level, ensuring the billiard balls do not roll an inch on their own.

2. The Nine-Story "Glass Elevator" Views

There is a reason this vessel earned the nickname the "Ship of Glass." It was built with over three acres of exterior glass paneling, giving it an airy, open feel that modern mega-ships often lack.

The architectural crown jewel is the Centrum, a spectacular nine-story central atrium. Instead of being buried inside the hull, the glass elevators here face outward toward the open water. Riding the elevator up to the top decks gives passengers a sweeping, panoramic view of the passing coastline or open ocean—a favorite photo spot for cruisers at sunset.

3. Powered by Modified Jet Engines

From an engineering standpoint, Brilliance of the Seas is fundamentally different from most cruise ships. Instead of relying purely on heavy, traditional diesel engines, she is outfitted with two General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines—which are essentially modified aircraft jet engines.

Why this matters for travelers: Gas turbines burn much cleaner fuel, dramatically reducing emissions and environmental impact. More importantly for guests, they run exceptionally quiet and cause almost zero hull vibration, resulting in an incredibly smooth ride even when cruising at top speeds of 25 knots.

4. The Climate-Shifting Solarium Dome

While newer mega-ships have massive outdoor water parks, the Radiance-class layout excels at destination flexibility due to its adults-only Solarium.

Designed with a distinct African safari theme—complete with large stone elephants and lush greenery—this indoor pool retreat features a fully retractable glass roof. If the ship is sailing a tropical Caribbean itinerary, the glass opens to let in the ocean breeze. If the vessel repositions to a colder climate like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords, the roof closes completely, creating a perfectly heated, climate-controlled paradise where guests can swim while watching glaciers pass by outside.

5. A Custom-Built "Panamax" Design

Brilliance of the Seas was engineered to a precise size specification known in the maritime world as Panamax. This means her length (292 meters) and beam (32.2 meters) were built to the exact maximum limits allowed to squeeze through the original locks of the Panama Canal. Because she strikes the sweet spot of being large enough for extensive entertainment options but small enough to handle restricted waterways, she frequently gets assigned to unique, destination-heavy world itineraries that Royal Caribbean's massive Oasis or Icon-class ships physically cannot reach.
