What a Royal Caribbean Cruise Really Costs in 2026
A 7 night Royal Caribbean cruise for two adults costs roughly $1,800 to $2,200 on top of the fare once you add gratuities, a drink package and Wi-Fi. Gratuities alone are $259 for the week. The drink package is the big one at around $1,400 for two, all in. Wi-Fi adds $140 to $200. None of that appears in the price you saw advertised.
That is the number nobody puts in the headline, so let us go through it properly. What the fare actually covers, what it does not, a full worked example, and where I would and would not spend the money.

FAQ
What is included in a Royal Caribbean fare?
Quite a lot, to be fair, and this is why cruising still stacks up well against a resort holiday. Your fare covers your cabin and daily housekeeping, the main dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Windjammer buffet and most of the casual venues, all the shows in the theatre and the AquaTheater, the pools and hot tubs, the gym, the kids clubs, and every free attraction on the ship including the slides, the FlowRider and the rock wall on the ships that have them.
It also covers water, standard coffee, iced tea and lemonade. Not specialty coffee, not fresh juice, not anything with alcohol in it.
And on the Caribbean sailings, the day at Perfect Day at CocoCay is included in the sense that getting off the ship and lying on the free beach costs nothing. The waterpark, the cabanas and Hideaway Beach are all extra.
What does a 7 night Royal Caribbean cruise really cost for two?
Here is a realistic worked example. Two adults, one balcony cabin, 7 nights, mid range ship, everything bought in the Cruise Planner before sailing rather than onboard.
Item | Cost for two, 7 nights | Optional? |
Daily gratuities at $18.50 per person per day | $259 | Technically yes, in practice no |
Deluxe Beverage Package at around $84 per day plus 18% | About $1,390 | Yes |
Wi-Fi, one device, at around $20 to $29 per day | $140 to $203 | Yes |
Two specialty dinners each | $180 to $250 | Yes |
Three shore excursions each | $400 to $700 | Yes |
Port transfers, airport parking or a pre cruise hotel | $150 to $400 | Depends where you live |
Realistic total on top of fare | $2,500 to $3,200 | |
Stripped back total, gratuities and Wi-Fi only | About $400 to $460 |
Look at the gap between those two totals. That is the whole point of this post. Two couples on the same sailing, in identical cabins, can be $2,500 apart, and almost all of that difference is drinks, excursions and dining rather than anything to do with the cruise itself.
How much are Royal Caribbean gratuities in 2026?
$18.50 per guest per day for interior, ocean view, balcony and Junior Suite cabins, and $21.00 per guest per day for Grand Suites and above. It is charged for every person in the cabin including children, for every night of the sailing.
On top of that there is an automatic 18% on every drink, specialty dining bill, room service order and mini bar purchase, and 20% on spa and salon. So the drink package price you see quoted is not the price you pay. Add the 18%.
You can prepay gratuities at the time of booking, and this is the one genuine hack in this whole post. Prepaying locks in the current rate, so if Royal Caribbean raises it before you sail, you pay the old number. Worth doing, because several lines have already gone up in 2026. Celebrity, which is owned by the same group, went to $19.50 for standard cabins on 29 July, and Carnival, Princess, Holland America and MSC have all moved this year. Royal Caribbean has not yet. Draw your own conclusions.
Can you remove them? Yes, at Guest Services before the morning you get off. Should you? No. That money is pooled across the dining, bar, culinary, stateroom and hotel teams, and the people it comes off are the ones who made your holiday work.
Is the Royal Caribbean drink package worth it?
It is worth it if you drink five or more a day, every day, and it is a waste of money if you drink three. That is the honest answer and it does not depend on which blog you read, it depends on you.
The complication is that the price is not fixed. It runs from about $70 a day on the older ships up to about $96 a day on the newest ones, with a fleet median around $84. Then add the 18%. So the same package that breaks even at six cocktails on one ship needs eight on another.
Two things people get wrong. First, they buy it to break even rather than because they want it, and then find themselves ordering a drink they do not want at 11pm to justify the maths. That is not a holiday, that is homework. Second, they forget the package covers specialty coffee, fresh juice, smoothies, milkshakes and bottled water too. If you start every morning with a latte and drink three cocktails in the afternoon, the maths is much closer than the pure alcohol calculation suggests.
Also worth knowing: if one adult in the cabin buys it, the other adult of drinking age generally has to buy it too. That rule catches out couples where only one of them drinks, and it is the single most common reason the package stops making sense.
How much is Wi-Fi on a Royal Caribbean cruise?
VOOM Surf and Stream, now running on Starlink, is the only tier. Expect roughly $20 a day per device at the fleet median, with a real range from about $18 up to $40 on the newest ships and peak sailings. Buy it onboard rather than in advance and you are looking at closer to $29 a day.
It is sold per device, not per cabin, but multi device plans bring the per device rate down. Two devices land around $52 a day, four around $80.
Is it good? Yes, actually. Starlink genuinely fixed cruise ship internet and video calls work now. Is it good value at $140 to $280 for a week? That is a harder sell, and it is the add-on I would drop first.
What does specialty dining cost?
Roughly $40 for Izumi sushi, $45 for Giovanni's Italian, $62 for Chops Grille, $63 for Izumi Hibachi and around $97 for the Chef's Table, per person, before the 18%. The immersive venues on the newest ships go much higher, with Royal Railway at $165 per adult and the Hollywoodland Supper Club on Legend of the Seas at around $220.
The Unlimited Dining Package usually beats paying per meal if you plan to eat specialty most nights, and the pre cruise price moves daily, so check it more than once. If you are only doing one or two dinners, pay à la carte.
And be honest with yourself about whether you need it at all. The main dining room is included and it is fine. Not exceptional, but perfectly good, and the service is often better because those waiters get to know you across the week.
The costs people forget until they are on board
The 18% on everything. It is on drinks, specialty dining, room service and the mini bar. It is 20% on the spa. It adds up faster than anything else on this list.
Shore excursions. Ship excursions run roughly $60 to $150 per person. Independent operators are usually cheaper, but you carry the risk if you are late back.
CocoCay extras. The island is free, the Thrill Waterpark, cabanas and Hideaway Beach are not.
The pre cruise hotel. If you are flying in, do not fly on embarkation day. Budget a night nearby.
Photos. They will photograph you constantly and the packages are not cheap. Say no on day one and mean it.
The casino and the arcade. Both quietly efficient at separating families from money.
Travel insurance. Not optional in my book, especially if you are flying to meet the ship.
Where I would actually cut
If I had to trim a thousand dollars off that worked example, here is the order I would do it in.
Wi-Fi goes first. Buy one device between two of you and take turns, or skip it entirely and use free wifi in port. You are on holiday.
Excursions second. On a lot of Caribbean and Mediterranean ports you can walk off and do it yourself for a fraction of the price. Not every port, and I would still book the ship excursion anywhere the drive is long or the tender is complicated, but three ship excursions in one week is rarely necessary.
Specialty dining third. Do one good one, not four average ones.
The drink package last, but only if the maths says so. Work out what you actually drank on your last holiday, not what you would like to think you drink. If it is four a day or fewer, pay as you go and you will save hundreds.
What I would never cut: gratuities, or travel insurance. Everything else is negotiable.
Frequently asked questions
How much are gratuities on Royal Caribbean in 2026?
$18.50 per guest per day for standard cabins and Junior Suites, and $21.00 per guest per day for Grand Suites and above. Drinks, specialty dining and room service carry a separate 18%, and the spa is 20%.
Can you remove gratuities on a Royal Caribbean cruise?
Yes, at Guest Services any time before the morning of disembarkation. They cannot be changed once the sailing ends. I would not do it.
How much does the Royal Caribbean drink package cost?
Roughly $70 to $96 per person per day depending on the ship and sailing, with a fleet median around $84, plus 18% on top. Prices are dynamic and generally cheaper in the Cruise Planner than onboard.
How many drinks do you need for the package to be worth it?
Around six cocktails a day at median pricing, or fewer if you also drink specialty coffees, smoothies and juices, which are included. On the most expensive ships it is closer to eight.
Do both adults have to buy the drink package?
Generally yes. If one adult of drinking age in the stateroom buys it, the other is expected to buy it too.
How much is Wi-Fi on Royal Caribbean?
About $20 per device per day at the fleet median, ranging from roughly $18 to $40 depending on ship and sailing. Onboard purchase runs closer to $29 a day. Multi device plans lower the per device rate.
Is food included on a Royal Caribbean cruise?
Yes. The main dining room, the Windjammer buffet and most casual venues are included. Specialty restaurants cost extra, from around $40 to $220 per person.
Are drinks included on Royal Caribbean?
Water, standard coffee, iced tea and lemonade are included. Alcohol, specialty coffee, fresh juice and soda are not, unless you buy a package.
Is CocoCay included in the cruise fare?
Getting off the ship, the free beaches and the included dining are covered. The Thrill Waterpark, cabanas and Hideaway Beach are all paid extras.
Should you prepay gratuities?
Yes, if you are booking well ahead. Prepaying locks in the current rate, so an increase before you sail does not affect you.
What did your last cruise actually come to once everything landed on the SeaPass account? Tell me in the comments, I think people would find the real numbers useful. Prices here are what I could verify at the time of writing and Royal Caribbean prices move constantly, so always check the Cruise Planner for your own sailing.
