NCL's biggest ship will now carry guests from 2 May 2027, almost three weeks ahead of her original maiden voyage

So, Norwegian Aura is arriving early. Norwegian Cruise Line has added two brand new Mediterranean sailings in early May 2027, which means the line's largest ever ship will welcome its first paying guests on 2 May rather than 21 May. If you've been eyeing a first-season sailing on Aura, there are now two new ways to be among the very first on board, and both are on sale now.

Key facts

  • What: Two new Mediterranean sailings added ahead of Norwegian Aura's previously announced 21 May 2027 maiden voyage

  • Sailing 1: 2 May 2027, a 10-day cruise from Trieste to Athens (Piraeus)

  • Sailing 2: 12 May 2027, a 9-day cruise from Athens (Piraeus) back to Trieste

  • Why: Norwegian expects Fincantieri to deliver the ship early

  • The ship: 169,000 gross tons, 3,840 guests at double occupancy, around 10% bigger than Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna

  • Booking: Open now, and the new dates are included in NCL's current Fall Flash Sale

What has Norwegian actually announced?

Norwegian announced the two extra sailings in a press release on 9 October 2026, as reported by Cruise Industry News. Here's what each one looks like.

2 May 2027: Trieste to Athens (10 days) Aura sets off from Trieste in northern Italy and heads down the Adriatic to Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia, then Bar in Montenegro. From there she crosses to the Greek islands for Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos, before finishing in Athens (Piraeus).

12 May 2027: Athens to Trieste (9 days) This one runs the route in reverse, more or less. Departing Piraeus, it calls at Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu, then Bar in Montenegro, and finally Split and Zadar in Croatia before arriving back in Trieste.

Now, look at the dates. The first sailing finishes in Piraeus on the day the second one starts, and the second brings the ship back to Trieste ahead of the existing 21 May departure. On paper, they slot together neatly as a back-to-back, which is worth knowing if you fancy a longer first taste of the ship.

After that, the original schedule carries on as planned. On 21 May 2027, Aura sails seven days from Trieste to Barcelona, calling at Valletta in Malta, Salerno and Rome (Civitavecchia). Then she crosses the Atlantic on a 13-day voyage from Barcelona to Miami.

Why is Norwegian Aura arriving early?

Short answer: the shipyard is ahead of schedule. Norwegian says the new sailings are only possible because it now expects Fincantieri to hand over the ship earlier than planned.

Aura was floated out at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard in Italy back in April 2026, and outfitting has clearly gone well since. Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, said the early handover "allows us to welcome guests aboard sooner than expected."

This is becoming a bit of a habit across the industry, and that's a good sign. Earlier this same week, Royal Caribbean added two sailings ahead of Hero of the Seas' original August 2027 debut, as Cruise Hive reported. Legend of the Seas and Star of the Seas both started early too. When yards keep beating their own deadlines, it suggests the big Italian and Finnish builders have got very good at delivering these megaships on time.

How big is Norwegian Aura, and what's new on board?

Aura is the fourth ship in the expanded Prima Class and the biggest thing Norwegian has ever put to sea. The numbers:

  • 169,000 gross tons

  • Roughly 345 metres long

  • 3,840 guests at double occupancy

  • 1,976 staterooms, including 159 suites in The Haven

That makes her about 10% larger than Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna. The headline feature is Ocean Heights, an open air activity zone spread across decks 18 to 21, with racing waterslides and a free fall drop. Norwegian has also promised its largest pool deck yet, an extended Ocean Boulevard promenade and a bigger adults-only Vibe Beach Club.

We've already covered Aura's dining and spa line-up separately, so I won't repeat it all here. But the short version is that this ship is built squarely around families and multi-generation groups.

What does this mean if you want to book?

Well, this is where it gets interesting.

These are now the true first sailings. If being on a ship's very first voyage matters to you, 2 May 2027 is the date to target. Norwegian hasn't said whether the 21 May sailing keeps its "maiden voyage" label or whether the May dates will be badged as preview or inaugural cruises, so if a certificate or official inaugural branding matters to you, ask before you book.

They're Med itineraries, not Caribbean ones. That matters a lot if you're in the UK or Europe. Trieste and Athens are both easy flights, and the routes are packed with classic ports. Santorini, Mykonos, Dubrovnik and Split are all on the list. For American cruisers, it's a longer trip for a first look at a ship that will be sailing from Miami a few weeks later.

There's a sale running. Norwegian says the new sailings are included in its Fall Flash Sale, which offers 50% off cruises plus up to $750 onboard credit per stateroom on balcony cabins and above. It can be combined with the Free at Sea package, which bundles drinks, specialty dining, excursion credit and WiFi. As always with "50% off" headlines, compare the final fare rather than the discount, because that percentage usually applies to the second guest or a base fare.

Expect a few teething issues. That's not a criticism of Norwegian, it's just how first sailings go. Brand new ships can have venues still being finished, crews still finding their rhythm and systems still being tuned. If you want everything polished, a sailing a month or two into service is the safer bet. If you want the buzz of being first, early May is your moment.

Existing 21 May bookings: Norwegian's announcement doesn't mention any changes or priority switching for guests already booked on 21 May. If you're on that sailing and would rather go earlier, it's worth a call to Norwegian or your travel agent, but don't assume you'll get special terms.

Where does Norwegian Aura go after Europe?

Once she reaches Miami, Aura settles into Caribbean life.

  • June to October 2027: Seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami to Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), St. Thomas, Tortola and Norwegian's private island, Great Stirrup Cay

  • Winter 2027 to 2028: Seven-day Western Caribbean cruises to Roatan (Honduras), Costa Maya and Cozumel (Mexico) and Harvest Caye (Belize)

So the May sailings are the only chance to do Aura in the Mediterranean, at least for her first year. That's another reason they could sell quickly.

FAQ

When is Norwegian Aura's first cruise now?

Norwegian Aura's first sailing with guests is now 2 May 2027, a 10-day cruise from Trieste, Italy, to Athens (Piraeus), Greece. That's 19 days earlier than the 21 May 2027 maiden voyage Norwegian originally announced. A second new sailing departs Athens for Trieste on 12 May 2027.

Why did Norwegian add sailings to Norwegian Aura?

Norwegian added the two sailings because it now expects shipbuilder Fincantieri to deliver Norwegian Aura earlier than planned. The ship was floated out at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard in Italy in April 2026, and construction has moved ahead of schedule since.

What ports do the new Norwegian Aura sailings visit?

The 2 May 2027 sailing visits Dubrovnik, Split, Bar, Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos before ending in Athens. The 12 May 2027 sailing visits Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Corfu, Bar, Split and Zadar before ending in Trieste. Both are one-way cruises, so you'll need separate flights in and out.

How big is Norwegian Aura?

Norwegian Aura is 169,000 gross tons, roughly 345 metres long and carries 3,840 guests at double occupancy across 1,976 staterooms. She's Norwegian Cruise Line's largest ship and about 10% bigger than her Prima Class sisters Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.

Where will Norwegian Aura be homeported?

After her Mediterranean debut and a 13-day transatlantic crossing, Norwegian Aura will be based in Miami. She sails seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from June to October 2027, then seven-day Western Caribbean cruises in winter 2027 to 2028.

The bottom line

So, a ship arriving early is about as good as cruise news gets. It means the build has gone smoothly, and it gives you more first-season dates to choose from. The fact that the extra sailings are in the Mediterranean makes this especially good news for anyone in the UK or Europe who wants to try Norwegian's biggest ship without flying to Florida. Just go in with your eyes open about what a very first sailing can feel like, and check the fine print on that flash sale.
