Royal Caribbean pushes back the 4 October embarkation on its newest Icon class ship. Here's what changes for guests, and what doesn't.

So, if you're boarding Legend of the Seas in Barcelona today, Sunday 4 October 2026, you're getting a later start than planned. Royal Caribbean has pushed embarkation back by two hours because a severe storm is slowing the ship's return to port at the end of her previous sailing. The good news: as things stand, your actual cruise, all five ports and the sea day, hasn't changed.

Key Facts

  • Ship: Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's Icon class ship carrying 5,610 guests at double occupancy

  • Sailing affected: 7 night Western Mediterranean from Barcelona, 4 to 11 October 2026

  • New boarding time: around 1:00 pm (was around 11:00 am)

  • Latest arrival time: 5:30 pm (was 3:30 pm); check in closes at 6:00 pm, all aboard 6:30 pm

  • Cause: Spanish weather agency AEMET issued an extreme risk warning for heavy rain in Barcelona from 9 pm Saturday to midday Sunday, with gusts of 55 to 75 mph

  • Itinerary changes: none confirmed so far beyond the delayed boarding

What happened to Legend of the Seas' Barcelona embarkation?

Royal Caribbean emailed guests on Saturday evening, 3 October, to say tomorrow's boarding would be delayed because weather was affecting the ship's arrival back into Barcelona. The story was first reported by Cruise Hive, which published the guest letter.

Every arrival slot has simply shifted back two hours. Boarding was due to start at roughly 11 am and now starts at roughly 1 pm. The final arrival window, which would normally close at 3:30 pm, now runs to 5:30 pm.

There are two hard deadlines you need to know about. You must be checked in at the terminal by 6 pm, and you must be physically on the ship by 6:30 pm. Miss those and the ship sails without you. That's not a new rule for this sailing, but with everything compressed into a shorter afternoon, there's less slack than usual.

Why you really shouldn't turn up early today

This is the part I'd pay the most attention to. Royal Caribbean has been unusually blunt about it: don't arrive before your slot.

The terminal won't open to embarking guests before the revised times, and the line says early arrivals won't be accommodated. In plain terms, you could be turned away at the door, and there's nowhere inside to sit and wait. The email put it simply: "Heavy rains are expected, and it will be uncomfortable waiting outside."

Well, that's an understatement given the forecast. So if your hotel checkout is at 11 am, ask for a late checkout, or leave your bags with the front desk and stay somewhere dry. A long lunch in the city is a far better plan than standing on the quay at Moll Adossat in a downpour.

Royal Caribbean is also asking everyone to do two things to keep the queues moving:

  • Have your luggage tags firmly attached before you get to the terminal

  • Have your online check in completed and ready to show

Both sound obvious. But on a day when roughly 5,600 guests are being squeezed into a shorter window, a few people fumbling with paperwork at the front slows everyone down. I've embarked from Barcelona myself, and even on a sunny day the terminal area gets busy fast. If you need a refresher on how the port works, my Barcelona cruise port guide covers the terminals, transfers and timings.

How bad is the Barcelona weather?

Now, this isn't a bit of drizzle. Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) put Barcelona under an extreme risk warning for heavy rainfall running from 9 pm on Saturday 3 October through to 11:59 am on Sunday 4 October. That window lines up almost exactly with when Legend of the Seas was due back alongside.

According to the forecast data cited by Cruise Hive, rainfall rates could reach 3 to 4 inches (around 75 to 100 mm) in a single hour, with a total of 7 to 8 inches (roughly 180 to 200 mm) possible across six hours. A separate storm warning flagged wind gusts of 90 to 120 km/h (55 to 75 mph) and possible hail, with coastal areas including the cruise port especially exposed to swell and wind.

So why does that delay a ship? A few reasons. Bringing a vessel of Legend's size alongside in strong crosswinds is a slow, careful job, and pilots and harbour authorities can hold ships outside until conditions ease. Once she's tied up, the outgoing guests from the previous sailing still need to get off, the ship needs to be turned around, and luggage has to be moved, all in heavy rain. Every one of those steps takes longer in bad weather.

There's also a safety angle that's very fresh in people's minds. Just days ago, on 30 September, Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady broke free of her mooring lines in Rhodes and hit three boats as she drifted. Nobody was hurt, but it's a reminder of why lines and port authorities don't take strong wind warnings lightly. A two hour delay is a small price for getting a 5,600 guest ship safely secured.

The one to watch is Palma on Monday. It's the first call, it's a relatively short hop from Barcelona, and the ship has a little room to make up time overnight. If departure slips well beyond the planned time, or if sea conditions stay rough, that's where you'd most likely see an adjusted arrival. But Royal Caribbean hasn't said anything to suggest that yet, and I wouldn't cancel a Palma excursion on speculation.

My honest advice: keep an eye on the Royal Caribbean app and your emails today and tomorrow morning. If anything changes, that's where you'll hear first. And if you've booked an independent tour in Palma, check its cancellation terms now so you know your options either way.

What this means if you're booked on a later Legend sailing

If you're sailing Legend of the Seas from Barcelona later in October, there's no knock on effect announced. This was a single weather event affecting one turnaround day.

But it's a useful reminder for any autumn Mediterranean cruise. October in the western Med can bring sudden, violent storms, the kind Spain gets each autumn when warm sea water meets colder air. Delays like this are rare, but they're not unheard of at this time of year. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Fly in the day before. If you'd flown in this morning and your flight had been hit by the same storm, a later boarding time might have saved you, or it might not. Arriving a day early takes that risk off the table.

  • Book a flexible hotel. A late checkout or luggage storage is worth more than a cheaper non refundable rate on a day like this.

  • Watch your email the night before embarkation. Royal Caribbean sent this notice on Saturday evening. If you'd not checked, you'd have arrived at 11 am to a locked terminal in the rain.

If you're new to Legend and want to know what you're walking into once you finally get aboard, my Legend of the Seas guide runs through the ship deck by deck.

Legend of the Seas Barcelona Delay: FAQ

Why is Legend of the Seas delayed in Barcelona on 4 October 2026?

A severe storm hit Barcelona overnight, with Spain's weather agency issuing an extreme risk warning for heavy rain and gusts of up to 75 mph. The weather slowed the ship's return to port at the end of her previous sailing, so Royal Caribbean pushed embarkation back by two hours.

What time does Legend of the Seas boarding start now?

Boarding now begins at approximately 1:00 pm instead of 11:00 am. The latest arrival time has moved from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. All guests must be checked in by 6:00 pm and on board by 6:30 pm.

Can I arrive at the Barcelona terminal early?

No. Royal Caribbean says the terminal won't open to embarking guests before the new times and early arrivals won't be accommodated. You may be turned away, and there's no indoor seating available, so stay somewhere dry until your slot.

Will Legend of the Seas still visit Palma de Mallorca?

As of now, yes. No changes have been confirmed to any port on the 4 October sailing, which still calls at Palma, Marseille, La Spezia, Civitavecchia and Naples. Check the Royal Caribbean app for any updates, especially for Monday's Palma call.

Are other Legend of the Seas sailings affected?

No other sailings have been affected. The delay is tied to this one storm and this one turnaround day in Barcelona. Guests on later October sailings should still watch their email the night before boarding, as autumn storms in the western Mediterranean can develop quickly.

The bottom line

So, a two hour delay on boarding day is annoying, but it's not a disaster. Your seven nights, your five ports and your sea day are all still on the schedule. The real risk today is turning up too early and standing in a Mediterranean storm with nowhere to shelter. Stick to your new arrival slot, have your tags and check in ready, and you'll be on board with a drink in hand before long.
