Norwegian Gem Insider Secrets & Hacks
Want to experience the ship like a seasoned pro? After walking the decks and exploring every corner of the Norwegian Gem, here are a few insider secrets to help you avoid crowds and find the best views onboard.
1. The Ultimate Sail-Away Spot
While most passengers crowd the main pool deck (Deck 12) during sail-away, head directly to The Great Outdoors at the aft (back) of the ship. It is an open-air buffet area with its own bar, shaded seating, and phenomenal wake views. It is much quieter than the mid-ship pool area and provides the perfect vantage point for watching the ship pull out of port.
2. The Secret Bridge Viewing Room
If you love ship mechanics or just want a unique perspective, the Norwegian Gem features a hidden gem: a Bridge Viewing Room. Head to Deck 11 Forward and walk all the way to the end of the port-side (left) hallway. You will find a small room with windows looking directly into the ship's bridge, allowing you to watch the captain and crew navigate.
3. Spinnaker Lounge During the Day
At night, the Spinnaker Lounge (Deck 13 Forward) is a bustling nightclub and game show venue. But during the day, it is often completely empty. With its massive floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, it is the absolute best climate-controlled spot on the ship for spotting other vessels in port or watching the coastline glide by.
4. Skip the Buffet on Embarkation Day
When boarding the ship on day one, 90% of passengers head straight to the Garden Café buffet, making it incredibly chaotic. Instead, drop your bags and head to O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar & Grill (Deck 8). It is open for lunch on embarkation day, included in your cruise fare, and offers a relaxed, sit-down meal while everyone else fights for a buffet table.
5. The Thermal Suite Hack
If you are considering the Mandara Spa, book your Thermal Suite pass online before your cruise or immediately upon boarding. NCL limits the number of passes sold per sailing to keep the area tranquil. Once they sell out on day one, you will not be able to buy access later in the cruise.
